hookbill, I really think the pillow played an important role in this.

<Devil's Advocate>

What if SetCPU fails? It is software, after all.

</Devil's Advocate>

I don't think it was software related at all. The closest thing I have for data is a couple of reports of max temps achieved on a seriously overclocked phone while 1) running Navigation, 2) plugged into automobile rapid charger (more heat generation that wall charger), 3) streaming Pandora and 4) mounted in a hot windshield. All four of these put a load on the chip/phone and the max temp was something like 119 or 124F. Also, the same person played one of the shooter or racing games nonstop and never got any real serious temperatures. The source of real heat is the battery malfunction. An internal short, while charging, IMHO (I'm no battery tech) would be capable of generating the kind of heat being reported.

My overclocked (1.2Ghz) phone only gets 5-6 degrees hotter than phones at 550 mhz even when I'm doing any of the stuff that causes temp increases. Of course, I've never covered it with a pillow and got readings!! (no offense op, just trying to be funny)

My first phone that I returned for a non related problem ran hotter than the phone I got to replace it.

My brothers phone runs real hot and he uses it stock without much running.

I think every phone will be different in some way.

1) Don't leave it under your pillow unless it's off.

2) Don't overclock it over 800 if your phone tends to be hot anyway.

Bayou, As I mentioned before I stress tested my phone to the max, I was streaming Pandora, Navigating, and playing Robo Defense in fast forward at 1.1ghz. I saw it in the upper 140's before it shut down and boot looped a few times until it cooled, and I only made it to level 30-something. The key to pushing super temp is running extremely graphic intensive apps/games, and Robo Defense is just about as intensive as it gets on the Droid as far as I've seen, the game just eats up the extra power like it's nothing. No matter what combination of things I try I can't get it to reproduce what is seen with running something like Robo Defense even all by it's self.

I challenge you to try a similar combo with Robo, I bet you see much more than 124F.

I had a similar experience with my Droid mysteriously overheating and draining the battery like crazy. Most likely something weird going on in my pocket (don't ask). And it wasn't overclocked then.

It's overclocked now, but other than shorter battery life it's been smooth sailing.

Bottom line:

Don't smother your phone with a blanket/pillow
Don't set your sleep/standby to 1,200 so your processor can run at max speed all night
Don't forget to set a profile failsafe that neuters power at a certain temperature
Lower your speed whenever in sleep mode and plugged in since battery charging adds heat

Sounds like common sense to me whenever doing something like overclocking a mobile phone. Why wouldn't you just do these things to begin with? Mine is capped at 1,000MHz (plenty fast) when I'm using it and otherwise all of the profiles are capped at 600MHz and min 250MHz because there's little reason to exceed that in any of those circumstances.

I think a mod should rename this thread to

"Don't charge your phone while it's under a pillow"

It's very misleading the way it is not to mention incorrect.

The title makes it seem like there's concern for everyone running 1,000MHz. What the title should read is: If you overclock your phone, use common sense.

Absolutely don't agree with this. His insurance is basically a "no assigned fault" policy
LOL. Stop making stuff up to rationalize fraud.

IV. WHAT THIS WARRANTY OR SERVICE CONTRACT DOES NOT COVER:
B. Defects or damage from misuse, accident or neglect;

C. Defects or damage from improper testing, operation, maintenance, installation, adjustment or any alteration or modification of any kind;
-http://support.vzw.com/terms/products/total_equipment_coverage.html

And yes, the OP knew the overclocking caused the damage. Stop pretending otherwise, stop rationalizing, and get some integrity.

My phone overheated one time when it fell under my pillow and i wasn't overclocked. My question is, will the insurance company care that the phone is hacked when you return it? Probably not ...just wondering.

No pretending and my integrity is doing just fine thank you. Stop with the insults and stick to discussing the issue with facts. I like your facts about the contract (see next paragraph however). Not pretending. My position is the OP wrongly deduced the overclocking caused the damage. Just as I could be wrongly deducing that there was a battery malfunction that caused the damage. (run-on sentence alert!!) Considering there have been failures of stock phones with very similar or the same symptoms and batteries are known to have produced prodigious amounts of heat when failing (internal faults), is it more likely that a software issue (overclocking), which according to everything you read on almost every forum, only raises the operating temp by relatively small amounts caused the intense heat? Look at all the Sony laptop battery failures; high heat production of lithium batteries due to internal faults. They melted laptops the temp got so high.

Good pull on the insurance policy quotes. However, that is not how they are administering it. You place your claim and they replace the phone. I still maintain that it really isn't insurance. They are simply selling you the right (at 6.99/month) to buy a refurb phone from them for $89. I'm still willing to bet that their cost on the refurbs is less than that. Otherwise why would they not be concerned with the "I lost it" claims, "I got it wet" claims, and such. In reality, they don't care what happened to the phone - they just collect the $89 and send a refurb.

Oh and btw, my integrity is intact and functioning well. Stop the personal attacks and stick to discussing the issues in a civilized manner.

Let's see how you did item by item:

1. Op knew what damaged his phone - Assumption no based on facts (Fail)
2. Insurance contract language - Facts (Pass)
3. Integrity Comment - Personal attack (Fail)

If this was baseball, that would be a pretty good batting average.

This is just and idea that might help in case charging / over clocking at the same time caused the overheating problem..

When I got my Droid I also purchased a " battery only charging cradle for the droid " and a " extra battery "... I carry a fully charged battery in my pocket at all times ,, When the battery in the phone has 10 % or less power left I do a quick battery change ,, Then that night I put the drained battery in the charger and let it charge all night.. This way the phone never charges the battery while sleeping ....

Again ,, Just and idea.

(Sarcasm Font On) How dare you try to interrupt the pissing match between me and what's his name with a constructive suggestion. What are you really trying to do?? Be helpful!! (Sarcasm Font Off) :icon_ banana:
