We get Kitkat in January

I think the best answer is that we will get the KitKat upgrade - soon! Ask tomorrow and it will be soon + a day! (recalled from my Bugless Beast days on the D1).

With the exception of emergency updates pushed out to resolve egregious bugs at the initial launch of a phone, I have never had an Android update that improved my device's performance, e. g., signal strength, etc.

Use to eagerly anticipate the newest whistles and bells and complain about Verizon's tardiness in releasing the newest Android iteration. But as has been pointed out here repeatedly Android has reached the point where the latest version for the vast majority of people doesn't do much but cause conflicts with existing apps.

Bottom line: I'm happy with the os that came with my Note 3 at launch, 4.3 didn't add anything to the experience (except provide a message that my Internet connection was unstable), and no longer will Verizon's glacial pace interfere with my enjoyment of a pretty great phone.

I'm sure I'll download KitKat when it becomes available but I doubt it will enhance in any measurable way the pleasure I have in using my phone. I probably sound like the old guy yelling at kids to get off his lawn, but for me there is no longer any point in wasting energy over Verizon's incompetence regarding the updating of its hardware.

Keep in mind, Verizon is in business to sell voice & data plans and phones. There is really no compelling reason to improve the user experience/performance for devices once they are sold. Like yourself, I have reset my expectations on updates and find myself less frustrated. I'll also download KitKat when its available with muted expectations. With all that said, my experience with the S4 has been very good, especially after my experience with the Motorola Droid Bionic. Also, going through an equally bad tablet experience regarding updates on my ASUS TF700 tablet, which I will soon replace.

As an aside, given what I have said above, I am now more open to custom ROMS :)

Wish you guys would quit raining on my delusions, every OS and app update is like Christmas!

4.4 isn't anything special anyways.... I'll stick with what I got going on my Note 3 already and be happy. Running BeansROM v5 on stock with Eclipse on slot 1 testing, and in completely set and happy. After a pantech breakout 2.3,then droid razr 4.0/4.1.2/4.2...this phone is perfect ...Can't beat the 3gb ram and snapiness, no lag no freezing up and lack of memory

Word now is that Samsung is putting off the update for the S4 and concentrating their efforts on the release of the S5. If so, that's crappy to treat existing customers that way.

That is a smart business move, stop the whining , what is wrong with JB 4.3 , nothing. KitKat was only recently released by Google, you will not see 4.4 on the S4 until the S5 is released, If I was the manufacturer I would do the same thing, no reason to Bork the sales of my new flagship device.
