Well, there's "Wear Mini Launcher" and others for launching apps. You can also launch any watch app pretty easily without those launchers.That's exactly what I've been meaning when I state standalone . More stuff you can do on the watch itself, whether tethered or not. More like a launcher and less like Google Now.
I'm really liking the direction AW is moving.

When I think standalone, I think COMPLETELY independent of the phone, like your Gear that has 3G and its own phone number. That's very standalone to me. That's not what I really want at this point, but we've discussed that plenty.
