either a ? mark or if it comes as email....as a text(handcent) it says downloading image but it never appears ?

The ? in email is a known issue. As someone reported, it seems to happen if it is embedded in an email. Nothing that can solve that right now, except viewing it from gmail.com from your phone.

Try uninstalling handcent and have someone send you a picture. See if it works, if it does, it was a problem with handcent.
