The Beta will not work on devices with it preinstalled unless you're rooted.

With the D2 and DX Swype is a system/application and updates are performed by OTA system updates - by signing up for the Swype Beta you would indeed receive the updates, quite possibly quicker than you will waiting for the OTA but you would probably need to "Freeze" the Stock Swype.apk that is included with Titanium Backup before the Beta would be able to be successfully installed

Edit: as FBM said - Root Access would be needed
