The Droid is a brick compared to the iPhone.
The iphone weighs 4.8 OZ. The Droid weighs 5.8 OZ. I didn't know that one OZ was all that separated a brick from a feather.
To be precise the Droid is 26% heavier than an iPhone (3gs). (169 v 135 grams). That is a noticeable difference. Furthermore, the droid is both longer and thicker than the iPhone. Such diffeences make no difference to me. I actually prefer the heftier feel of the Droid. The fact remains that I've heard more than one woman complain about the size and feel of the Droid compared to the iPhone.
Furthermore, it's simply a fact that the greater popularity of "smartphones" among men means that more women are moving up to a smartphone for the first time. The fact that the Droid is among the heaviest of the breed (if not the heaviest) means the contrast will be especially noticeable to women.
Look. The Droid already faces significant obstacles in competing with the iPhone (as well as other smartphones) among women simply as a result of its form factor and "computer-like" interface. An advertising campaign that looks like it was designed for boys who grew up on Transformers certainly does nothing to lessen that inherent gender bias.
So what does Motorola do to balance that with a phone that emphasizes a social networking UI and a less intimidating form factor? They introduce something called the "Devour" that looks like a Droid, weighs as much, and has a mediocre camera. The designers at Motorola need to supplement their engineering classes with at least a couple of marketing classes.
