So I run advanced task killer and I see all these apps running that I never launched? Is that because they are looking for updates or something? These are solid apps too so it's not like I'm thinking virus here.

They arent actually running they are just prepared to run. It helps to speed up performance of multi tasking they show up in task killers but are using very minimal resources. That way when you launch the app there is no lag or little lag. Its just how android runs there was a thread in here somewhere talking about just this
I wouldn't worry about stock apps that run on boot. They're probably just sitting in memory and not using CPU/battery. As far as apps that are downloaded from the market, I always reboot the phone and check if they're running on startup. I don't need my music player, for example, to run on startup. If it does, I uninstall. (I use Pandora instead of Slacker because of this.)
If you become an advanced user, you can root and tweak the apps on the phone and memory usage. However, it takes a lot of time and knowledge and for most people probably isn't worth it.
Thank you for this link, I learned a lot. Seems like the smartest thing to do is let my Droid X control what is running and what is not. If I seem to have an issue with something then maybe I'll start to tinker around.
