Why does a Galaxy have a 13 pin power source?

Why does a Galaxy have a 13 pin power source? Why not a micro?

How is a 13 pin similar or different than a micro power source on my Motorola Droid?

How many combinations of power sources are there in modern phones and what is the difference between them?

Lots of discussion on this over on the XDA Forums. The GT connector supports USB, AV out in a single connector.

One user on XDA has actually modified a stock 13 pin connector to support micro-usb cables.
