I MAY be too old to learn :>) How do I connect to my SBC router here at home or at a coffee shop with available wi-fi?

WiFi needs to be on. If you have it enabled, you should be notified when there are availble hotspots. Pull down the notification, click on the notification and you'll be able to select a WiFi spot to connect to.
