long press on the screen>>widget>>pick the one you want

yea i use widgets, you just long press screen> click widgets> then select your widget

I have multiple widgets i use but the battery question depends on the widget.
My battery widget doesnt take much up at all
but a facebook widget which refreshes and draws data from the internet all the time can take up alot of battery.

Uding widgets is good, just depends on which ones u use on weather it'll effect your battery life
