Wikipedia in Google Maps?

In Google Maps there is an option to turn on a Wikipedia layer. When I turn it on a lot of "w" show up on the map but no matter how I try to select a "w" nothing seems to happen. I was expecting a Wikipedia entry. Did I assume wrongly?

There must be some way to get to Wikipedia entry from the "W" on the map, but I haven't been able to figure it out...
