Windows 10 Launch Quick Guide: Almost Everything You Need to Get Started

Idk how I feel about Edge. I'll give it a try, but I'm so emotionally invested in Chrome. I was reading today about some features they haven't included in it yet, so we'll see.

I do like that I read that the calendar/etc have Google integration since that's where all of my data is located.

I'm making a system image of my Win7 partition right now (have been for over an hour now) so that I can do a clean install on my rMBP.

Afterwards, I will boot into OSX, erase Win7 in bootcamp, create two extra partitions, and eventually end up with OSX/Dedicated Win10 OS partition/Data Partition.

Hopefully it works out without any hitches

I considered doing a clean install (think I already said that), but I'm sure there's some file I'll need later that I forgot to backup. If this doesn't go well, I'll reinstall 8.1 clean.

The main reason that I am doing a clean install is because I want to shrink my OSX partition that I rarely boot into and then reallocate that space to Windows. That way I can just have Win10 on its own, clean partition and the rest of my programs will go on the third partition.

During my Win7 backup it asked me what all I wanted to save so everything I will need will be on an external drive without losing anything I may have forgotten about. It is also doing a system image, but I am not sure I could use it on my Mac.

Yeah. I didn't do a full backup of my system. Just copied the files I know I'll need to my NAS. Figured worse case scenario, I'll end up with a clean install of 8.1 & the files that're most important.

Like I said, I don't use my PC q whole lot these days. All of my pics are on my phone or in the cloud.

Hopefully not icloud :D

I found it quicker to copy key directories I THINK have all my key app settings and profiles....because that's the biggest PITA when restoring. There's only a handful of programs I need that for and to make the transition as smooth as possible I only want to restore settings/data very selectively.

Otherwise I have all the stuff I absolutely can't lose backed-up multiple places. I'm going to do a clean install and then create an ISO because I believe if you ever replace your hard drive you're going to be SOL (which is another argument for creating a partition of specific size solely for the OS).

Yeah. I was reading the FAQs today. You can reinstall without a license key on any PC that you install it on during this one year window, but if you make significant hardware changes it says you have to contact support to assist with reinstalling.

Finally up and running! Posting from Edge right now while some updates download. Hoping the driver for my touchpad works better the one in 8.1 did. It was constantly crashing. Could still be used, but lost multi-touch capabilities almost every time I used the computer.

Yeah, I'm using Edge as my main browser now. The ONLY thing I really miss from Google Chrome is being able to pull up Inbox...which I don't have to do now that I have the Email app to post notifications for me. The only other thing I'm missing is just some extensions I use like Pushbullet and Pocket, but I can live without for the time being.

EDIT: There is one thing I do notice, there are a lot of Mac-isms and designs that I've been noticing. However, I don't think they copied, they really did a decent design overhaul that Windows has been needing.

I don't really use a ton of extensions in Chrome, so I think I'll be ok there. I'll give Edge a go for a while. Syncing up to my Google account now for Mail, Calendar, and etc. Still need to launch my web-building software and see how that made the transition. Really don't wanna have to edit the code manually to make changes to the site I manage until there's a fix if it's not working...Kinda trying to put it off and play, but it's a necessary evil.

Oh man...Was that crazy. Right as I hit to post that last post, I got an alert sound, Edge closed, and my entire screen went black except for the cursor. Desktop came back and I relaunched Edges, but it closed again. Dunno if that was an issue while adding accounts or what, but I wasn't sure if my post even went through until I could finally get Chrome to boot up. Got some more updates queued up, so I won't pass judgement until all of those are done and a few more restarts have been completed.

Also, I had previously only had a black desktop background, but I switched to the "Windows Spotlight" or whatever (which I've seen some complaints about on other sites). It disappeared a little while ago.

The fun of being an "early adopter"...Haha!

It's definitely nice to use 10 on a machine that's got better specs than required. I'm pretty sure the machine I loaded the preview on at work was originally an XP machine. It ran better than my original VM did, but not by much. Probably why I didn't spend more time playing with it during working hours even though my position in IT warrants checking out new operating systems. Will try to launch Edge again after posting this from Chrome.

Also, my Network drive is apparently having issues. Haven't decided yet to see if updates and restarts fix that or just remove and re-map it.

I had one weird issue after the update that fixed itself that dealt with my graphics driver. All I had to do was restart and it was fixed. Strange. I've also been running on Edge this entire day. I haven't dealt with Cortana just yet, (windows spotlight if you don't set up Cortana). I'll report back if I run into the same thing.

EDIT: Wow...'Task View' is basically 'Mission Control' from Mac. So glad Microsoft added this. SO USEFUL!!!
