Worth waiting for Quad Core?

As many have said, Quad cores will not be beneficial because neither ICS nor any apps will be optimized for their use. App devs are just getting around to optimizing multi-threading for dual cores, so pick up your favorite dual core phone without any worries.

Something to remember is that quad cores will most likely have the same start up problems that dual cores had, it's part of hardware evolution. This means delayed phones, hardware revisions, software tweaks ect... Waiting for a quad core device to come out that meets your needs could be an 8-10 month wait from now and still result in no real world performance increase.

As soon as the Nexus comes out, it meets every need I've been looking for since I bought my OG, so it's definitely worth the purchase.

Try meeting your specific needs, instead of looking for the next best thing. This way you're satisfied with your purchase and your device covers all of your needs without making sacrifices.

Lol, my 1gig single core phone is still plenty. If you have an upgrade and 4g in your area I'd get the Nexus for sure. Like others pointed out its going to be the most supported phone by both Google and the Dev community. Doing think you can go wrong with that phone.

U know what is dumber than all this talk about the nexus gpu being weak? (Which is starting to get annoying hearing people talk about how the gpu sucks yet the phone is blowing reviewers away...)

Waiting for quad core when ics which is optimized for dual core JUST came out.

So ye wait for quad core. You'll have two more non functioning cores while I'll have two that work perfectly fine together.

Quality>quantity.

If anything the iPhone has shown that to be true. They always have the lowest specs yet their phones shine in benchmarks and real life performance.

Couldn't have said it better myself

Will all of the GN hype, I can't help but wonder how long it will take for this phone to be considered old news. With the new Quad Cores supposedly around the corner, when do you think the next Nexus device will be released and is it worth waiting for a Quad Core Nexus? I do like the vanilla Android experience on these devices. Is there any reason to pass on the GN?

Well you could wait but you might be waiting like everyone is waiting for the GN. Think of how long it's been since we first heard of the GN compared to how long it's actually taking it to get to market. Reasonably assume the same expectation for quad-core processors on cell phones.

Yeah wait for a Quad Core that won't be supported for over a year and will get you 10 minutes between charges.

Won't quad cores be more battery efficient? Running 4 cores for phone operation and running 1 core for standby thus saving battery? I'm no guru but what I've heard...

Your correct. It will be a long wait in technology time.

Actually quad-core (kal-el equipped) devices do have benefits..a fifth companion core and a 12 core GPU. Gaming is where quad-core will shine initially.

and why just not wait for anything else after it?

You will never win at the waiting game... ever... always something faster, bigger, newer is coming out...

Key is, get what you can at the current time... that will carry you for at least the next two years... so right now, between the Bionic, Razr, Rezound, you can't go wrong either way...

Those who wish to wait, can get the SGN in December, and those hardcore hardware keyboard fanatics, might get their shot as well at the Droid 4...

True... but it's so close what would the harm be? All those phones are still going to be around in early Jan. If the OP is really interested in quad it may be worth it.

LOL, there is so much bad information in this thread....

All the people parroting that ICS won't support quad core processors have absolutely no idea what they are talking about. ICS fully supports multiple-core processors. Doesn't matter if it's 2, 4, or 8 cores, it scales them all the same, turning on each core as needed.

Quad core phones are coming, they will be faster than dual core, and they will have better battery life. It's so weird that so many people here state things as facts, when they really have no idea.

Here is a video showing how the processing cores scale as needed when running Android 4.0. This particular Tegra 3 processor actually has a 5th, low-voltage core that runs during idle states to save even more battery.

All that said, I'm still rocking my OG Droid, and can't wait to get the GN when it comes out. I can't play the waiting game any longer.

What it really comes down to is that the T3's will be extremely new tech, not just for phones themselves, but for all software engineers to utilize.

It simply takes time for developers to optimize their programs/apps to utilize this new chip technology. ICS will have to take advantage of the fifth 'companion core' during lower power consumption to help increase battery life, which will take a software update to be achieved. The additional 2 cores will also need to be worked into old and new apps/software, which again takes time.

New 'pay for' games will be the first to utilize the 4 cores, as they will have been designed with quad cores in mind from the start, not resulting in additional spending unlike already established games/software, which will need to be reprogrammed to utilize multithreading, which isn't necessarily difficult, just takes time, again costing companies money(many chose not to do this during the PC dual core to quad core evolution).

Nvidia can say all they want about T3's, but programs do not just automatically start magically mutlithreading, or all of our PC software would automatically utilize multithreading when we started using quad cores. Look up how many programs you use on a daily basis that still only utilize dual cores even when you have a quad core, I assure you it's the majority. Nvidia is a company trying to sell their new chips, they're not going to show you all the times their chips don't do anything, that would be bad business.

The biggest point to be made, look how smooth phones are with dual cores, do you think you'll even be needing this optimization within the next 2 years?
