I also got the D1 on release day back in November and I loved it the whole time. I got the X on release day too, and I love it even more. I would love to have custom ROMs available for my X, but it's not as critical as it was with the D1. The X performs better in every way than my D1 did when it was running Sapphire and overclocked to 1.25ghz, so as long as we have themes (which we do) I wont really miss the ROMs all that much. I also still think custom ROMs will be here much sooner than the naysayers expect. The kernals will be a tougher problem though, luckily the X is already really fast without big overclock speeds.
I got my DX yesterday after playing with my girlfriends for a while. Coming from a rooted D1 with Sapphire and a 1.2 Ghz processor. I don't really see a difference in speed in the two devices. I love the bigger screen, the better camera, transfering files between my phone and my girlfiends through wifi with the dlna, and the noise cancelation. I hate the bloatware, no 2.2, and crapblur. I miss my old gallery, my homerun battle 3d character, and a slide out keyboard so I could read the screen while typing.
I do not plan to flash Froyo onto my DX before the OTA update which should be in about a week or so. If it doesn't happen by that time I will probably go ahead and take the plunge since I was able to grab a copy of the update.zip before Moto started yanking it.
Ill see how i feel about the phone after froyo hits it.

Had the D1 for 3.5 weeks...payed 1 cent for it through amazon (with a new contract...since I escaped from Apple...lol) Then the DX came around and I went to the VZ store to get a hands on demo and fell in love! I gave them back my D1 (at a corporate store location) where they credited my VZ account with $249.00 and ordered my DX. I had to pay the $300 for it but got the $100 rebate and had to use an old VZ phone that I got from someone till my DX came (All worth it!!!).....so my last phone bill was paid in full and I still have a nice credit towards my next bill too! Gotta love it!
Thanks for all the replies. I need to swing by a Verizon store and do a hands on check out of the X.
A question about themes on the X. What is needed to install. Are they through App Market or are they downloaded and then installed? What is the "tool"/program needed to install them if not in the market?

Themes do require root access, my current fav theme (black glass from 928Droid) uses an update.zip through the Clockworkmod Recovery. There is also a Metamorph version.
Had the original Droid and would NEVER EVER go back to it after having the X. I get 24+ hours of battery life with heavy usage and that was impossible on my D1. It's faster, nicer and overall a better phone. I have never looked back.
