Text Notfications

Is there a way to turn off text notifications in the status bar? I dont want them in the bar, but I do want a sound to be played. I know if you go into the settings and uncheck the notifications it no longer puts it in the bar, but then I also get zero notifications until i look at the phone. I was unable to turn this off on my other Motorola products.

You could use a third party text app.
I use Handcent.
