Android is losing

I hate to throw another wrench into this thread, but I wouldn't count Windows Phone 7 out either. It's still pretty immature, but it's an extremely slick, functional interface. I used a Samsung Focus for a few weeks awhile back, and loved it the whole time I had it.

I was wondering about that. I need to try one at some point.

The biggest benefit that Apple has right now is the depth and quality of apps. Everyone else has to play catch up and that is very hard to do.

Yep - everybody has an iPhone app, so you don't have to be sucked into the Apple ecosystem in order to get the full benefits of having an iPhone. That can't be said as easily for Android, or WP7 for that matter since I mentioned it.

I think thats going be because apple devs only have to build apps for 1 set of hardware/software specs where droid devs have to build for a wide variety. For instance, my cousin has a behold 2 thats still on Donut (1.5?) if i remember correctly, but my d2g is on froyo. So devs have to build for the older systems as well so they dont lose oppurtunities for sales. Also, Apple apps have been around longer than the android system/apps so theyve had more time to get more experienced. As well as Apple's tighter control on the market than google.

Fruit company (Apple) has a very good team of engineers and produces high-end innovative hardware; just check out the silica-ceramic composite material used on the iPhones casing. That aside, apple is all about proprietary bs, being "trendy", and implementing their very well designed marketing campaign. Their whole "i" product line gives me a gag reflex and I simply refuse to join their cult of fanboys. I'm not gonna lie, when the iPhone first dropped I bought it because it was one of a kind, but the second a competitor came out, I was happy to switch. I like the direction android is going, hopefully a company will step it up and release something with higher end hardware, but honestly...I will take anything before using iOS or "i" anything, just my opinion.

You nailed it. The fracturing of the Android ecosystem is it's biggest weakness and it will be the one thing that can cause it's failure. They need to make a strong push to get everything on the same playing field. They are only hurting themselves having all of these versions floating around.

Disagree. Its like the basic apple vs windows.... what's different? One company produces both the hardware and the software and the other just produces the software and distributes it to all the hardware manufacturers. What your suggesting is for android to be like apple... not happening nor do I want it to. Now, improving the SDK to help developers support across different platforms and hardware, I agree with.

Just merge all the companies into 1 and put out the equivalent to the 2 and the X every year (with unlocked bootloader pl0x) and we would have a really good competition in my opinion. It would give a sturdy hardware base to built from and wouldnt require coding for 5 different versions of the android OS at a given time..... or take CK's suggestion, apdroid = apple hardware with android sofware?

Unfortunately I think this is how Google wants it. I don't remember where, and can't find it upon a quick search, but Andy Rubin put out a long article or interview last year, and in it he basically indicated that Android being "open" was meant more for the carriers than the end users. I think they want to be on as many devices as possible for ad revenue purposes, and my personal opinion is that that is their #1 goal, superseding any other issues, like framentation.

No, what I am saying is Android needs to push not having so many versions of Android spread across so many different devices at one time as it makes developing apps hard with each version of Android having specific capabilities. That is a very real and acknowledged problem. There are about three different versions of Android OS's currently out and they are NOT all capable of running the exact same apps.

Like force extinction of past releases by updating all devices? Do you think all devices can run honeycomb?

Are you typing that from your macbook in Starbucks ;)

I am assuming you are just being humorous and not snide, but please avoid posts like this as they cause trouble with turningngood threads into flamefests.

Sorry.. my fault, I honestly was kidding.

No problem, I thought that was the case. It is just that these threads tend to get sensitive and have to be treated a little differently than most of our other threads.
