Android tethering FAQ thread

The $20 is only for 2gb. That is nothing. I could do that in less than a day.

I see your problem. If you are not rooted then the program tether is a good solution. In beta testing for Android, used it many times on my old Blackberry it uses your exiting data plan. Here are the links if anyone is interested.

Just download it from you Droid Device here -- http://tether.com/a/tether.apk
and then install the software for your PC http://tether.com/a/setup.exe

only PC version working Mac will be released at a later date. I used on both with blackberry.

Not really its actually better than cable connection I have athome 90% of the time. I meant my ps3. But ihave a nodded and jailbroken ps3 running on linux. What helps is there is a VZW celltower with in 1000ft of my home

Guys.....please. Think a little bit before you put those little remarks in there. People get offended. That bulimic comment really isn't acceptable. It's a real disease and we have a huge forum.

(facepalm) yeah and live in the sticks with slow internet too...

sincerely,
highly offended:)

Aside from the fact that it's a bad idea to do that, you can use a variety of methods. The hotspot hack frees up the hotspot app, the WiFi tethering app from my signature is supposed to do infrastructure mode on the X now, and you can set up a connection via Connectify Me if you have Windows 7.

Quick question - I'm rooted and have had no problems using the wireless tethering app - I usually use it pretty rarely (once or twice a month, maybe) with my laptop or netbook.

I just acquired a Barnes and Noble NookColor e-book reader, which I promptly rooted, so it's now a great little Android tablet computer as well as a reader.

However, it can't seem to connect with the Droid in wireless-tether mode. My laptop connects with the phone just fine (and somebody else was able to connect with it also, today (unintended)), and the Nookie connects with any other wireless router out there.

Has anyone else seen this issue? Fix?

The Nook Color will not recognize Ad-Hoc connections, unfortunately. There may be a method to bypass this similar to how people tether their iPads, if you'd like to give it a try.

Bummer. Yes, I'd be open to trying a fix to this as long as it allows me to switch between the two modes. Is there an app (Market or otherwise) that allows me to do this easily on the Nookie (which is still running rooted Eclair; hopefully will have Froyo or newer up on it soon)?

Thanks for the come-back.

They do have ROMs for Gingerbread and Honeycomb, but the dev forums all have "Danger! Danger!" warnings stating they're still very alpha...even their Froyo ROMs are still beta-ish and they're warning people not to flash them...yet.

Anyway, will check out Barnacle. It has VERY mixed reviews in the Market - everything from "this hosed my phone" to "greatest app yet". I'll back up my phone and then give it a shot when I get a chance. Thanks.

I personally HATE barnacle, but some people claim it's the fastest thing going -- I continue to have stability issues with it, even on a whole new phone.

You can use the Google Code tethering app from my sig, too, but try both.

Tried it...but it doesn't seem to work right on my rooted Droid 1. It comes up, appears to be running. However, the netbook sees it but doesn't connect, even with the same settings as in 2.0-pre7 (whether or not encryption is on).

I still have both versions installed on my phone, so can try it again...there are more settings in the new version, so it's possible I have it misconfigured.

I notice, though, that there's no selection specifically for the Droid 1, just "auto" and "generic"; I assume either of those should work...
