Another One on the Fence

I know this question must've been asked several times already, but here's another one for ya: I'm on the fence on whether I should buy the Maxx HD. I'm more off than on this fence, but since I'll be buying it full price (probably off Amazon) since I'm still on contract with my dreaded Bionic, I'm really looking for some input from current Maxx HD owners who can help me get over the idea of chucking $600 for the phone. I still have my Bionic and am soooo ready to toss it. I loved it at first, stood by it when everyone else trashed it, then slowly started to resent it. The biggest pain for me concerning the Bionic is its battery life. I'm not willing to shell out any more for this phone, so buying yet another battery is out of the question. At the same time, it's the battery that keeps drawing me back to the Maxx HD. I'm reading about other phones (LG, HTC) who are coming out with phones with way better cameras/screens/whatever, but it's that battery life that's really calling to me.

I'll admit, I felt pretty burned by Moto because of my Bionic (I honestly have so many problems with that phone I don't even wanna get into it) and thought I'd never get another Moto. But I've been following the Maxx HD since it was first leaked and even though other phones were recently announced (Note 2, Droid DNA), I'm still going back to the Maxx HD. I don't need a giant screen (the Bionic had a big enough for me, imo), and the Maxx HD doesn't look like the screen would be too big (it still has to fit in my purse). And none of the phones being announced has the battery. You can correct me if I'm wrong on that; I just haven't seen any myself. I also think I like Blur compared to others like Sense or whatever Samsung has.

So, I guess the point of my thread is to ask current Maxx HD owners what they think of their phone now that some time has passed. (Another sore point is that I can never wait; I have to be an early adopter, hence the Bionic and my N7 who's screen can't stay flat to save its life.) How do you guys like it? Is the battery alone worth the price? Would you guys purchase it even if it meant buying it at full price? Any regrets? Anyone wish they would've waited? Anyone glad they didn't? Anyone wish they had gotten another phone? Anyone can't see owning another phone?

When is your upgrade date? I see no reason to pay full retail unless you have unlimited data on Verizon.

You know, until you asked, I didn't even realize how close it was. It's May of next year. The last time I checked my upgrade date was in 2011, so I guess I was under the impression of 2 years still. And I unfortunately do not have unlimited data. I do have the 4gigs for $30 and don't want them messing with that and sending me back to 2gigs. I have no problems paying full retail if I think the phone will be worth it. And you have no idea how much I loathe my phone. I really do. The battery drains much much faster than it should, I can only charge it on a dock because for some reason it doesn't like being plugged in directly anymore, widgets get all mucked up, I haven't been able to update to ICS, it likes to toy with data connection, I'm constantly having to rearrange my contacts, the camera is absolutely atrocious... I really could go on. I honestly don't think I can make it till May.

I've had my Maxx HD for three weeks now and I'm very satisfied. I like to read Kindle at night with black background, so for me an HD Amoled is way better than even the best LCDs. The battery life still impresses me. I tend to charge it every other day but sometimes I forget and go 3 days on a single charge. It also charges back up really fast.

I watched a TV show in HD that I missed using HDMI output. In fact I streamed it from my home network through the phone into the TV. An hour later battery usage was negligible. The camera is pretty good as long as you have ample light. In dark environment like most other phones it struggles. I'm running rooted jelly bean on it with adaway and for the most part it's buttery smooth. Sometimes switching between screens is glitchy but for the most part the phone feels very fast.

I really couldn't go back to a phone with a small battery now. I feel so spoiled with this phone. Battery life is never my concern anymore.

I frigging love mine! Only thing about the phone that isn't amazing is the camera, which isn't as bad as some make it out to be. I've been taking great pictures with it, you just have to be aware of lighting and exposure.

I had the original Droid. It was great, at first, but as with anything, the memory stayed tetering on the edge of full and had to constantly delete cache and some apps. It had slowed down and even running backups was time consuming. I also wanted the larger screen. I am a loyal Motorola customer from back in the '80s with their two-way radios. They just take abuse and keep working. When something is completely dependable, there is no reason to consider changing.

The 4G surprised me. I really did not expect as much of a difference as I see. The apps download very fast. I guess the chip speed makes the installs faster, so the fast download and fast install seems to take no time at all. Again, so much of difference from what I had, that it made me think something had not gone right.

Going to this new MAXX HD, was like going from a Miata to an Red Bull F1 car. The backups run so fast, at first, I thought some kind of error had occurred. My old phone may take 5-10 seconds to execute command, and the MAXX was instantaneous. The memory seems limitless. With 340 apps installed, the memory has just scratched the surface. Whereas I used to take an extra battery along, now at around three days on, I will check to see where I am at on time left. That has been strange to get used to. One hand can hold and control the phone. The screen is bigger than the whole original Droid. The screen is such step up from the LCD (and it is clear, just small) that it is like going from a 12 inch computer monitor to a 50+ inch flat panel. When you do charge, the new 1150 mAh charger does charge faster than the older 500-800 mAh chargers.

For me, it was worth waiting on . I needed: larger screen, more memory, faster execution. I got what I needed. Now some need better camera, or have some screen complaints, etc. So, for them another choice is better. Some people I know really like the note. It is larger, but too large for my needs. So, look at what is important to YOU. The camera may be helped with JB, but who knows. Look at ALL of the phones that are out there and get objective opinions, when possible. Get what meets YOUR needs and expectations.

Good luck

I have had my Droid Maxx HD about three weeks. Came over from a Droid X with larger battery. It would just barely last a full day in the end. At first it was a day and a half.
This one will last two and a half days with moderate use. The 4G is very fast and the phone boots quick in the morning. No regrets except for the price at over $300 tax and all was steep but you want to play you have to pay. Sold my old X with accessories on eBay for $90. Camera suits my needs. In HDR mode it take some very nice shots. I am not too quick to learn features but it has all I need. Lost my unlimited plan but the Verizon reps polled my past three months use and assured if I continued at my pace I would not go over on data. My wife has iPhone 4s and I am not impressed with it at all. It's a phone for dummies. Don't mean to hurt anyone's feelings just my take on it.
Three weeks in and we have used way under our 4 gig limit. We saved maybe $200 a year by going with the new plan.
Summary... I have no regrets so far on the Maxx HD. I can recommend it.

I bricked my Bionic because I had rooted it and couldn't for the life of me get it to take the ICS update, which I desperately needed because my data was dropping constantly. I have unlimited data and wasn't due for an upgrade til the middle of next year, so full price it was. I was jaded towards Motorola after my experience with the Bionic and data drops, so I got the Samsung Galaxy S3. I had that for about a week and a half. After three dropped calls I took it back to Best Buy and got the Maxx HD and am so much happier with it. It doesn't feel so light and cheap as the S3, I haven't dropped a call, I prefer Moto's interface, and the battery is GREAT!! Just my two cents.

I can upgrade on Nov 17 and can't wait to pick up the maxx hd. I've had the HTC Thunderbolt for the past 18 months. Not a bad phone, but the battery is very weak, always running out of juice. Read today that jellybean will improve the camera!

I've had my Maxx HD since they day it came out and paid full price for it because I could no longer stand using my useless droid charge and wanted to keep unlimited. I've loved this phone since I first turned it on. The battery easily lasts 1.5-2 days with data turned on. It is a great phone. Be aware that if you are paying full price that verizon actually is $50 cheaper than amazon.

I bought the Maxx HD on the third day it was out. I also paid $650 outright for the phone. I don't regret doing that for a single day. This phone has the best battery out there no doubt. Although, it doesn't have the greatest screen or camera... but it is good! The screen is nowhere near the worst, and neither is the camera, they are still good. And now that Moto and Google have become one, they are getting faster update than most Verizon phones (even faster than nexus device). So who knows, Jelly Bean on the Maxx might even make the phone even better!

You guys have me sold. I think I'm gonna make this my Christmas present to myself this year. Thanks for the tip, skier8735. I'll check out Verizon first. The screen resolution won't bother me; I'm coming from a Bionic and I thought the screen on that was pretty good, so I'm sure the Maxx HD will blow my mind LOL

I'm not really interested in owning another brand. I've been a pretty loyal Moto customer since 2000. I thought after the Bionic I'd try another company, but the others haven't really impressed me. The only thing that might've swayed me was a Nexus, but not only is Verizon sans Nexus, but I refuse to own an LG or go to AT&T.

Have you guys noticed any issues? I know it hasn't been out that long, but has there been any widespread issues brought up? Any must have accessories? How do you feel about that new dock thing?

I haven't had a chance to play with the maxx hd yet, are the "on screen"buttons annoying or welcome?

The only issue I have is that I can't get the GPS toggle on switchpro to work. Because of this I'm running the stock launcher. I have the car dock but haven't actually used it yet.

I was skeptical about the on screen keys at first but now I like them.
