Apparent GPS Failure

My GPS worked flawlessly all this week while I was out of town working in Leesburg, FL. Now that I'm driving home, 45 minutes outside of Tampa, the GPS goes out again.

To quote Kevin Klein from A Fish Called Wanda, "...DISAPPOINTED!!"

For what it's worth, I'm back to flawless GPS the past 2-3 days.

I don't have any confidence that it won't peter out again, though.

My second exchanged droid worked a little some of the time...but then didnt want to work (even in an open field). Being a glutton for punishment, and I was in Springhill Fl I decided to try for droid #3. They were very nice there. After testing they fired up #3 with my phone number, etc. And of course the GPS wouldn't work outside in the parking lot. The kicker: They had a demo droid in the store which had the GPS working perfectly. And right next to it I held #3 which would get any gps satellites. Was given all sorts of voodoo possibilities.

They told me it was a Google issue and wrote Google on a card and sent me on my way.

Any ideas, other than returning it within the 30 days???

I have a fix that I'm testing. You can read the basic procedure in my posts above. Once my test period is over, I will post a formal procedure that Dan agreed to sticky. Currrently, my gps has been working without issues ever since the fix. As far as I can tell, I'm the only one that's been able to fully revive the GPS.

Well guys I made it to west TN And GPS has worked and is still working since I left my local area. Anyone have a guess as to why this is? I'm dumbfounded

I have a theory that this problem may be related to more than one cause. I think it might be related to some location-based apps or widgets (since I did a proper reset, I have not used the Weather Bug widget). I also think there may be an issue in comms between the GPS and wireless location system. This is somewhat supported by how folks moving to different regions seeing valid GPS fixes.

I think we are getting some great data here, folks. Keep posting.

Erich,

Followed all your reboot, reformat, etc to the letter. After an hour still not locked on.Probably should have stayed at a Holiday Inn Express.

Oh well. Maybe tomorrow. Maybe something else will turn up.

OK...how long did you leave out the battery before the re-activation? I didn't just do a re-boot, I actually did a Factory Reset (Settings-> Privacy). I had the battery out for about half an hour.

Did you leave the SD card out of the phone during the re-activation and attempt to get a GPS fix? Also, did you turn off wireless network location?

PM me with your details so we can exchange notes. This could be an issue from several levels, with no single fix.

Also, could you post what location-based Apps and Widgets you have running or even installed?

Erich

I am glad you guys are working on fixing this issue. I to think the issue is multi layered. Keep checking the motorola site and get involved in their forum for the droid device.

i guess it really comes down to this
the gps doesn't work in south west florida
i live in clearwater, fl
have had the phone for a week
have 7 other gps units..... garmin and tomtom
they all work
this one doesn't
i downloaded "GPS STATUS"
a great program....
it shows you the sky, like other gps units
it find the satellites..... but never locks into them
i have NO idea why this is the case
even my rep's (verizon) phone won't work around here
most techs on the phone know about the problem (some don't, of course)
i've been given the same "song and dance"
a "FIX" is coming.... it'll be an automatic download update by the end of the THIS year
we'll see
i didn't buy the phone for its gps capabilities....
afterall..... the phone won't work more than an hour when it's tracking by satellite
but.... it's a useful feature i'd LIKE to have working
by the end of the year.....
who knows why it seems to work EVERYWHERE else in the US
makes NO sense to me
one thing.... ALLTEL was king here until the "merger"
not sure if the high-density of alltel towers that verizon now owns has something to do with this

any thoughts?
thanks for the forum and this thread
greg

the strangest part.....
is this BLACK HOLE on the West Coast of Florida that seems to be the center of most of the GPS failures...
why on earth would this be?
i wish the fix would come soon

i think we ALL know that if it were NYC having THIS problem..... it would have ALREADY BEEN RECTIFIED :)
