Apple May Cause Touch Panel Shortages for Android Tablets and Others This Year

lets watch the language and lighten up on the Apple Bashing. I don't like being called an idiot. You android people fee so insecure over the mention of apple that you go absolutely rude with your comments. Apple is ot Microsoft, believe me.

Post contining obscene language were removed. Bash if you must but keep it clean. And don't call me an idiot.

Its like buying up most of the high octane gas before the race so the other guys might not get the best gas for their cars. Doesnt this make them look like they dont have a lot of faith in their own product?

This has the potential to backfire down the road on Apple. Free market supply and demand is in play here. When supply is down (with actions such as this), price goes up. However, the market will respond by increasing capacity (building new factories), and price will go back down if the need isn't there for the product quantity that is being produced. However, if supply greatly exceeds demand, there is a gult in the market and prices plummet.

To be sure, Apple is paying dearly for this 60%, and will pay for these displays whether they use them or not. Apple could buy these and lock them away in a warehouse somewhere for years, perhaps, if they don't use them all in 2011-12. That would create a glut in their inventory (accountants hate expensive inventory on the books year after year) which could have some impact, albeit minor most likely, on Apple's overall financial health.

In the long run, even if Apple is committed for the next 10 years to buying up a majority of available supply from all sources, this will inevitably lower prices for this technology for everyone since the markets will still respond to this action as they always have. Apple cannot change that.

I think Steve's absence from the helm is beginning to show here.

I'd never call you an idiot because well I am an idiot! :)

But I disagree with your Apple is not Microsoft defense. Baseless lawsuits, unfair business practices (like the one listed here), and unfair labor practices in the factories they contract with to build their stuff. In fact, I'll even say they are worse than Microsoft especially because of the last one.

Apple fanboys will defend Apple against all attacks, I understand that. But the fact remains that Apple has become the corporate giant that many jumped on their bandwagon to get away from.

You make it sound like all other companies (HTC, Moto, Samsung etc) build their phones in the US paying their workers $40 per hour. All these devices no matter from which manufacturer are built off the backs of very low paid 3rd world country workers. The specific factory you are talking about also makes devices for IBM, Toshiba, Acer, Dell and others, and most sadly it is considered one of the better places to work for the poor in China.

Good points. Still if Apple was as altruistic as they and their followers like to claim then things should be different. In the past Apple has been above resorting to moral equivalences as a defense.

Apple is considered one of the best companies to work for in the US. They were one of the very first companies to extend all benefits to domestic partners. Their culture is friendly to all people, and their workers in the US are well compensated. I wish it were not the case, but there is a line between the "idea" people (i.e. Curpentino) and the factory workers. Apple is a publicly traded company and therefore has shareholders to whom they report. They have sales and profit goals. They need to be price competitive even at their overall slightly higher up front costs. Building phones / computers / iPads etc. in an industrialized country is cost prohibitive.

There is a great hypocrisy in this country. We all want goods made in this country by people making good wages. The problem is, we do not put our money where our mouths are. We say we don't want our jobs shipped overseas, but good heavens do we go to WalMart or Best Buy and find the $99 Blu-Ray player and not even look to see where it is made.

Sorry for the rant, it isn't meant at anyone in particular. The point is Apple is still a business and they need their products to be price competitive AND have a profit in every device or they will not survive. No company could.

Apple products becoming more expensive than they are already - I wasn't sure if that was even possible.
With the prices some of their stuff has, you'd think they already did make it in the US.

I am fairly certain the R&D costs Apple has put into an iPhone is higher than what HTC has put into the TB, or Moto into the X (or whatever). Just the amount of money put into iOS compared to the amount put into Android by either of those manufactures.

The iPad *is* expensive, but the XOOM isn't exactly cheap. I'm not going to count any Android 2.x tablet in there as they are not on par with either the iPad or XOOM.

I hate apple, but all I see is genius marketing. The fact that they made a market for giant cell phones that can't make phone calls is really impressive in and of itself.

Apple will try whatever it can to keep Android from ruling but it will can't be stopped.

Revolt! Haha... I can't say anything, I've got a Mac Book Pro that's almost 5 years old and still runs like a champ, the only thing is the battery doesn't hold a charge (2nd battery in 5 years). They've got great products, and they ain't cheap, but it's dirttttty business with this strategy. If everyone knew about it (and not just the active members of this forum), they'd change it, but not many people know bout it.
