Apple Patents the Wedge Design

I was just about to pull the trigger on a MacBook Air, but this latest development has changed my mind. Their unethical (albiet legal) business practices really do disgust me. As a matter of fact, I'm going to try my best to never buy an Apple product again. Their products are good but they're not that good and I can do without them. I've lived 30 years of life without ever owning any Apple products, and I've survived just fine.

I forgot the rounded off corner.. let's patent that.. and also the corner design like moto uses on the razr and maxx, let patent the words, power cell, battery, electricity, and all of the profanity words there are!!!!

I think it's becoming less about technology and more about who has more money for lawyers. These patent laws need to be revised so stupid stuff like this never makes it through.

Agreed! I used to like Apple more and would probably consider an iPad or something, but with each outrageous lawsuit and every new patent granted that is extremely broad and likely based in prior work makes me sick. I won't be purchasing any Apple products in the foreseeable future. This bitterness that Apple has for Android has only muddied their image and creates animosity between iFanboys and Android users.

Also the USPTO is horribly inept if they just put their stamp of approval on whatever garbage Apple scribbles up and sends in. Many times the patents are so vague that you could argue in court that everything infringes on their patent. Seriously, anything with a wedge "design" could wind up in their crosshairs if it means damage to Android. Heck, they would sue a chair manufacturer that has a wedge shaped chair if they thought it would hurt Android.

Our society has gone from survival of the fittest to pandering to the pussies, just like when they banned that little kid from scoring touchdowns in pop warner football a year or so ago. Everyone is missing the point. Getting a patent on a product does not prevent anyone from using the design, it simply requires others to pay royalties if they want to use the design. Patents are designed to recognize and promote innovation. Why shouldn't Apple be able to patent a new, and potentially more innovative laptop/device design? I would also imagine that Ford (or some other company) did get a patent on the spoiler. When you invent something that others will want to use and innovate, you should be given credit (money) for your work.

Because Apple has categorically denied any attempt by anyone to settle and allow them to pay royalties. They are not filing the patent claims to benefit their innovation but are doing so only to prevent others from manufacturing and selling their product. Proof of this is their injunction suits against manufacturers for violating vague patents.
At some point someone needs to look and see this is an attempt by Apple to monopolize the industry and stop it under the anti trust laws currently on the books. Steve Jobs personal hatred of Android aside, it is illegal to have total dominance of an industry not only inside the United States and Microsoft in Europe is an example.

I think it's crazy that something like that can be patented. I think it's definitely a flaw with the patent system. It makes sense for a company to want to get as much money as they can out of a design and reduce competition, so I can see why they would do this. I still don't think it is right though.
