Are Screen Protectors Really Needed? (On Gorilla Glass)

Two reasons I use a glass screen protector.

One, sand will indeed scratch gorilla glass and I live in Florida. Two, the oleophobic coating on gorilla glass does wear off making greasy fingerprints hard to get off.

The same two things apply to a good glass screen protector as well, difference is I can peel it off and replace it when either happens.

Just makes sense to use one... will the phone function without ? Yes of course but, for as little as $10 is it really a decision worth debating? IMO - No.

Reasonable case and a screen protector is just a "next step" for me and after all, for many of us this is a hobby ..... hobbies are all about accessories.

Ask any golfer, cigar smoker, Jeep owner, etc......

Oh....don't get me started on Jeep owners Captain. That's a whole other Forum worth of stuff. [emoji106][emoji41]

been lucky so far with my latest phone. thinking about it, over the years I have only dropped my phones only a few times. only damaged one phone by breaking the antenna and that tells you how long its been. hope I did not just jinxed myself :-)

I rarely drop my phone, I put it in my lap and get up or out of a vehicle and it hits the ground. Very bad habit.

A few years ago I got out of my car in a hurry, my Galaxy Nexus was in my lap and hit the ground glass side down but I tried to put my foot under it to break the fall only to kick it across the pavement.

It was like a hockey puck on ice, barely scratched the screen.

wow, I do something like that and it would be in a thousand pieces or more. talking about luck.

True but for everyone of those fortunate situations there are phones that took one drop and is spiderwebbed.

I think this is one of those things that the person needs to decide what they are comfortable with.

For me I'm not comfortable with a phone without protection. I buy a phone full price every 12-18 months depending on the device.

I like keeping my phone prestine looking. Plus I have that luck that I will have that slight imperfection where one drop will shatter my screen. My DD I keep a case and glass screen protector because of work and just cuz. But my backup phones I rock "raw dog" naked or with just a skin.

LMAO, nice.

I [emoji817]% agree, if your device is capable of a glass screen protector there really isn't a good reason not to use one (personal preference aside).

I have an S5 that was used without a case or screen protector, the screen had to be replaced and the sides of the device look like a dog chewed on it :)

I have a Moto E 2015 that I used as a backup for a while, it has always been naked and doesn't have a scratch on it. My luck seems to be directly related to how much I care about a device, the more I care the more I drop it :(

Really it's due to how much you use it but still.

I guess I am a non-conformist, or something like that. I don't have any screen protectors on any of our phones with traditional Gorilla Glass screens. One is a year old already and the screen looks as good as new.

I wouldn't call it being a conformist to use protection, it's all personal preference.

It's like sex, it's better without protection but can be dangerous :)

I can tell you from personal experience that a screen protector saved me a lot of $. I dropped my phone face down on concrete. I picked it up expecting the absolute worst and at first glance that is what I saw on my beautiful Note 8. But as i started chipping away the glass much to my surprise my note's screen was 100% unscathed. This is actually the second time this has happened to me. The other was a ZTE.
