AT&T Acquires T-Mobile USA

Maybe 45% share over all but almost 100% GSM. That could be something the regulators look at.

Good point, although I don't think they'd distinguish between GSM and CDMA. Although you could make an argument that there is no other carrier to take your GSM phone to, but realistically that doesn't seem like a very practical argument given how the industry currently works.

Why can you see AT&T buying T-Mo as going through but say a purchase of Sprint by VZW would not?

I thought Sprint has a decent sized larger share (20% vs 12%?). And VZW already has a huge footprint so if you start looking at it on a market/regional perspective a VZW/Sprint reduces competition more than AT&T/TMo. You might also make a distinction on smartphones/mobile broadband, but I'm not sure how those numbers break down.

I guess technically TMo isn't far behind Sprint, but to me they just seem a distant 4th in this race.

This looks like bad news for the smaller carriers like US Cellular or Virgin Mobile, I've always seen T-Mobile as the bridge between the big carriers (Verizon, AT&T, Sprint) and the smaller ones. They'll probably lose even more customer base.

The sad part of this is that if T-Mo had a decent network to begin with, they would have a better subscriber base. How much of the country does T-Mobile cover where AT&T doesn't have coverage? I always thought Sprint / VZW made more sense as they are both CDMA for 3G, and in the areas where VZW doesn't have coverage, Sprint is already there.

Are there really areas where Sprint covers, but Verizon doesn't?

^I just thought about this.

Is this gonna mean more phones for AT&T? Are the phone that were exclusive to T Mobile gonna still be available? Is this gonna mean less phones being made now that they are merging?

Not only Android, but the other mobile OS's (other than iOS) may be hurt by this.

Article on endgadget says T mobile just put out a F.A.Q. No iphone or other at&t phones. If I was on the laptop I would post the link.

Maybe it's a bad assumption, but I always assumed the "extended coverage" parts of VZW's coverage map were mostly covered by Sprint. I know when I was visiting my nephew at Ft. Hood, I was on Sprint's network. But now looking at Sprint's map it appears *most* of the areas where VZW uses roaming to provide coverage so does Sprint.

I still think I can see VZW picking up Sprint. There is no doubt the extra towers will come in handy as they move everyone to 4G.
