Battery life on MIUI

I tend to agree with the sentiment about v5, but this is based purely on experience. As I mentioned in my own thread, I went from SS 4.8 able to make it through an entire day on a single charge unless I was using it heavily. With MIUI v5, I could barely make it 1/2 of a day. I have noticed this everytime I have flashed v5 except last night when I didn't setup any of my email accounts, so this could be the culprit. This morning, with v5 running, I drove 7 minutes from my house to a store and dropped 10% not using the phone at all. By the time I got to work 30 minutes later, I was down to 70%. This is much worse than I have experienced on just about any other ROM. I'm hoping that v6 is better on the battery.

Curiously, I have my email settings set to "automatic" or Push. Is it possible that MIUI could be polling for email rather than waiting until it arrives? This could be killing my battery. . .

did you read the thread?

others:
Also, I just checked my phone usage and have 90 percent left at 3 hr 13 minutes.

Another thing to think about when it comes to your battery is...(if you are using auto brightness) the ambient lighting in the place you use your phone the most. The brighter ambient light is going to make your phone automatically increase brightness.

Just a thought.

Hi Yak,

I did read the thread, and while it isn't clear why some are seeing battery performance issues with MIUI (v5 was the most drastic for me), the issues are there and have been reported by many. I have the utmost respect for the guys who are porting and patching these ROMs and am looking forward to a MIUI that is stable enough for my use. YMMV.

Yak,

I really think it was something about v5 that wasnt agreeing with some of our phones. The rule of thumb around here is every droid is different. The same file/rom/theme whatever will have 1000 ways of working on 1000 different droids. What works for some people wont work for others, that being said I put on v6 after having to charge my battery after 4 hours of use on v5. Im on 9 hours with 40% left with the same use.

I love MIUI, It has finally stopped me from flashing roms every other day. I plan to stick with this as long as its 75% stable lol. I dont mind a force close here or there. As long has it can do the basic things that get me through the day then im a happy camper.

I also had battery issues with v5... I had to keep my phone plugged in at work for fear it would suck the battery dry. Sometimes the phone would completely die at night when not being used.

With v6.2 I have noticed significant increase (as I did with 6.1 also). Im pretty anal with my settings and the roms are setup identical with the same apps and settings.

Not sure why it mattered with v5 but it did, and its not our imaginations. But then again, who cares? Its fixed in v6.x

i am on v5 and my battery life was soso, well reading the threads and taking yakitori's advice my battery life has improved greatly, i actually flashed slayers v1.6 800 kernel and my phone doesnt run as hot either, the brightness of the screen makes a big difference i believe...i am also running juice defender...i will be flashing the newer version of miui later......so thanks yakitori............

NP man! Glad it helped for you.

Also, no matter what ROM im running, occasionally (1 x a month or so) I will wipe dalvik cache in terminal. It restores the snappiness and helps with battery life as well. Just remember in MIUI there are two dalvik cache locations /data/dalvik cache...and /cache/dalvick cache. CD and RM * both of them in terminal when wiping them.

I personally dont think that there is a large deviation between phones. That would be a result of poor quality control on motorola's part, and motorola is a very high quality company. They are located in my metroplex and I know some folks that work there. Their standards are strict. I believe the differences between phones lies in the user...what apps they are using...how they set things up etc.

For example: White pixels use more battery than black pixels. Live wallpapers use more juice, news and weather widgets use juice (which is why I love BW for weather, and delete geniewidge.apk through root explorer from the very beggining), signal strength, ambient light, quality of the battery in the phone, kernel, o/c profiles....lots of variables effect battery use. These types of things are not so much ROM spec, but more of what the user has done in addition to the ROM.

Battery life was marginal at best between different versions of miui (v5 included). After calibrating, clearing dalvik cache, using setcpu profiles and giving a few days for the CPU to relearn the charge/discharge points...battery life was pretty close to what I have seen with any other ROM. (possibly slightly less, but not obvious difference)

My battery life is okay, I got 10 hours basically just texting and turning on the wifi occasionally to check fantasy scores. When I look at the battery use, number 1 is display and number 2 is Android system at 15%. It says it used to CPU for over 30 minutes and doesn't seem to be normal on other devices. Does anyone know why this would happen?

Hey guys,

I went ahead and tested my battery life over the weekend on MIUI v6. I cleared the dalvik cache(s) and reset the battery stats when the battery was at 100%, then went through two entire discharge and charge cycles. The first cycle was actually pretty good. I spent between 1-1.5 hours on the phone w/ my bluetooth headset, playing podcasts in the car, checking email, downloading apps, etc. I ended up getting approximately 6 hours of use with med-high usage. I was pretty pleased with this. The second charge was much worse. On the second charge, I made it approximately 3.5 hours from 100% to when it turned off. Last night, I put it on the charger at approximately 5% battery, and took it off this morning when I got up. I walked upstairs, ate a bowl of cereal and realized that I had already dropped 20% of my battery. The phone had only been off the charger for 10 minutes. I hadn't done ANYTHING except check to see if I had any email.

Processes that were using the majority of the battery after 10 minutes were android.process.acore at 32%, Email at around 30%, and screen at 26%.

I am running the Slayher 800 MHz kernel, and am running underclocked at 400Mhz. Screen is dim, not sure what other settings would help at this point.

I have read a few other posts where others have had good luck with other kernels, so that might be my next attempt unless somebody has any better ideas?

Thanks,

Seth

That doesn't sound normal. Try flashing a different Rom for a couple days and observe again. If it persists... consider replacing your battery

Willdo. SS 4.9 just came out, and while I don't think I'll like it as much, it's worth a shot.

Thanks,

Seth

I have a similar problem. I did some traveling today and when I left my droid was at ~70% battery. and then about 5 mins down the road all of the sudden it shot down to 20%. Not really sure what is wrong I doubt my battery is dying because the phone is only about 6 months old, but who knows I've had stranger things happen.

I've moved over to SS 4.9 and also the latest ShadowROM. No battery issues whatsoever. I'm thinking that this is ROM related. I'd be curious to know what other people are finding and whether good battery life is consistent with this ROM. If anybody has any additional info, let me know. I may try out juice defender to see if that helps also...
