Best SMS App?

I downloaded Textra last night because of this post. I'm liking it so far. We will see with more usage.
I used to be big into Handcent and/or Go SMS Pro. I think I stopped using them when I switched to Samsung, maybe sooner. I never got into Hangouts. I've used stock messaging for the last year.

Handcent was my go to SMS app until they wanted a yearly subscription to keep ads away. That's when I switched to Textra.

GoSMS was the one that I used before Handcent.

I downloaded it too, also because it's so highly recommended by people responding to this thread. So far I'm torn between it and one of the two stock messaging apps on the phone already. My only quibble with Textra: the app icon that I keep at the bottom of my home screen doesn't have a little superimposed number showing me how many unread texts I have. Silly, I know, but I've been using Motorola Android phones since 2010, and I've gotten used to that. I'm still not 100 percent used to not having the colored LED notification lights lol

Okay, I had to jump on this bandwagon too! Yes @kevins686, having the unread count icon would be one feature that is lacking. Maybe it will be added in the future.

They're pretty responsive to user feedback so I'd suggest write to the developer and ask that it be added. I think they stand out in their pop-up method and perhaps choose that over unread counts. I personally don't like the unread count but I also think it should be there for those such as yourself that do prefer it. A simple on/off option would be great to have there.

I'm back on textra again. Had another issue last night with MMS not downloading in Hangouts. I don't get a LOT of them, but I am part of an ongoing group message and we've got a gal working on our wedding pictures who's sent us some samples of the shots she's got, so I'd like to get them from trusted parties when they come in.

It's a shame too, because I was really looking forward to and already liking the added Android Wear functionality of the new Hangouts, but a messaging app that won't download my messages doesn't do me much good.

You can roll back Johnny by going to Apps > Uninstall Updates until they fix it.
Another bad Google update. I know it must be hard to get an appointment perfect in every device, but it is disappointing how often Goog rolls out broken updates.

Meh...I know. I still had textra installed from when they rolled out their Stagefright fix though. I'll just stick with it until the bugs are ironed out. If I can't have the added benefit of better android wear functionality, it doesn't make much difference and I didn't really give textra much of a chance since the new Hangouts came out shortly after I installed it.

I just had one last night that was a group message with a picture. I have it set to auto-retrieve again since I got the Stagefright patch update to my phone itself. It didn't download it and when I tapped to download, still nothing. Switched back to textra and there's the picture and a response from someone else in the group.

Been using GoSMS Pro for years now. Have tried Chomp, Handcent, Hangouts, Textra, and a few others I can't recall at the moment, but I've always preferred Go. Go did get to be pretty bloated over the years, but they did a complete overhaul late last year and slimmed it way down, only keeping the better customization features and that was nice. I only just recently switched back to Textra last week because of the Stagefright fiasco. It's "ok" and does the job, though I wouldn't say it's any better than any of the other popular sms apps out there.
