You can send someone to explore without a gun & they might find one, but make sure you've got a stash of caps to revive them if they die.

Is the kid her son? If so, you might wanna start a new game. There's no rebuilding through incest.
Of course, if everything's on fire, the kid & the pregnant lady are hiding. Who knows what happens if no one is there to put it out...?
I'd say that illustrates the con of building your rooms so big. I have a lot of single unit rooms, so fires & intruders stay more contained for longer.
If start a new vault if you're not completely disgusted with it at this point.
