I have had this problem since day one of getting my Razr back in Feb. Along with not being able to hear the touch tones (DTMF) while placing a call unless the speaker is in your ear. (this is a defect per Motorola, and no fix in the works!)
There are way to many problems with these razrs and maxx's. Some work as they should some don't. Really think I will steer away from Motorola if and when I ever get another phone. I have totally lost my faith in this company.
I deal with them in the communication field also, and they are not like they used to be.
Just for informational purposes, the lack of volume for the touch tones (DTMF), is NOT a defect, it's simply Motorola's decision to limit the volume to prevent ear damage. Apparently there were complaints from some who had the phone up to their ear but in a way that the proximity sensor didn't detect, and when their cheek hit the numeric dial pad, the sound was "ear-piercing". Personally, I hate that the Dial Pad volume is so low, since while driving the road noise is so loud I can't hear the touch tones, and unfortunately don't know if the dialing is working or not unless I take my eyes off the road to look - a road hazard if you ask me.
From the Original Generation Droid 1 (OG Droid), which still to this day (even with subsequent updates) sounds good and loud when dialing, the D2 and later models ALL had the volume muted on the dial pad. On the OG Droid, the volume is actually controllable using the Media volume setting, and can be set anywhere from off to 15 (16 levels selectable). On the D2 and future models, the volume is fixed at a level comparable to 5 on the OG Droid (about 30% of full volume) and can't be either increased or decreased, but can be turned off.
I had rooted and installed the Liberty 2.0 ROM on my Droid 2, and low and behold, the volume for the dial pad works, and it's LOUD. So it CAN play those tones loud, and in all likelihood there are ROMs out the for the RAZR that also allow the full volume from the Dial Pad, though I haven't burned a ROM on either my RAZR or the RAZR MAXX, so I can't speak from experience on these particular phones.
There is an app called
exDialer, which replaces the Dial Pad on the RAZR (and other models), and is good and loud. The volume of those button presses is controlled by the Ringer volume level. Give it a try!
