That's why, sooner rather than later (if not from the start), VZW will have to cap LTE.

Can you imagine how badly people will abuse torrents with speeds 12x faster than 3G? Not to mention tethering.

Yeah, with the rated minimum speed of lte being faster than ev-do rev a's max, i can only imagine what these 24/7 tetherers will be eating up on a monthly basis.

Some ppl are using, and i know this is a very limited populace of vzw users, 50 GB a month on 3G already. Its insane to think about.

As people are throttled the top five percent will go down as the people who are throttled will lower data use in the following months. And note users probable don't use much data... Like on att top two percent meant 2GB. It is quite a wicked plan if they do implement it in such a way that actually does curtail (which is the point of it)usage as that top five percent will move to low er GB numbers.

I broke down what that means to us smartphone users in real numbers and people seem to think I'm off base... some people have put up strange arguments. Like "its the top 5% of users of 5gb"... if that was the case, Verizon would've said it that way, instead of saying the "top 5%"... 5% of the 100 million users Verizon will have come the 10th will be 5 million users. Period. Not some obligatory figure connected to the users over 5gb....

You think that VZW doesn't do this already? The 'Unlimited' plans are really 5GB anyway. Over that and they will cut your download speeds... at least that is how their 3G aircards and Blackberry 'unlimited' plans have always worked

In the advertising there is a difference in unlimited droid phone plans and 5 gb limit tablet plans. Its in their new tier data plan.

I don't really get why people say anyone who uses data over 2 gb is abusing it. What Verizon sold us isn't just a phone. Its a computer. If dell sold you a computer With an unlimited data plan people would be using the data 3g like some droid phone users are. Its the same. If you are saying the data users have a measurable impact on the system then why are you not equally mad at Verizon for selling a product they can't deliver on. They sold he data usage people are using so much and instead of building towers with the money we pay them, they are throttling.

Just because some people think 3g isn't meant as a desktop replacement internet didn't keep Verizon from selling it as such.

Its a portable computer with unlimited data. If someone is sold unlimited data on 3 g on a portable linux computer then this is to be expected.

Its a sad day when people have become complacent in not expecting the bandwidth of an internet connection they are sold. By all right if I am told my speed is 500k to 1.5 mbs then I should be able to use that data stream 24/7. People expect to get their cable modem speeds event though its shared whe tthe nieghborhood. If every one is on then speed goes down but no one should get kicked. If I had a server streaming all the time that should be possible.

Same with wireless internet sold by vzw. Most of us in the 5 gb to event 50 gb range are still far short of using the internet all the time. We are being pretty conservative.

Just because its "phone" internet doesn't mean it wasn't sold as a laptop phone with data plan they say go nuts with.

I swear to god, when I bought my Droid 1 no one at the VZW corporate store said "this is a computer" nor did they say "you've got unlimited data go nuts".

The simple fact is a cell tower can only carry so much traffic. Period. It's also quite expensive to put up cell towers, and in many communities where towers can go is very limited. My town does not allow towers within its borders, except in two very specific locations. That's it, VZW, Sprint, AT&T, T-Mo can't put up any more. Many communities consider them eyesores and cannot be put up in residential neighborhoods. I doubt you want a tower in your backyard.

With that in mind, there is only so much a provider can do. One thing they can do is put some sort of limit on how much data can be used.

Firstly, no one here has a clue what this magic 5% number actually relates to. Everything mentioned is speculation. Someone back a few pages stated that while he would agree that phone calls and emergency calls trump his "need" to download movies on his phone 24 hours a day, he doesn't think someone using opentable once a week should get any preferential treatment over his 24 hours a day of usage. That's insane, and that behaviour is the reason ALL wireless carriers are trying to figure out what to do. Even the CEO of Sprint has stated that "unlimited" plans will stay around until they get abused. One of the reasons Sprint doesn't have this issue is that they have far fewer users than ATT or VZW. If Sprint had twice the customers they have now, I betcha they would have to impose some sort of reasonable limits too.

There are plenty of people on this board who abuse the ToS they have with VZW (rooted so they can wirelessly tether w/o paying any fees, using PDAnet etc to tether via USB w/o restriction). Wireless data on your smartphone doesn't mean "oooo let me hook up my home computer to this phone so I can dump Comcast".

If they start cutting back service at 2GB, that is something to ***** and moan about, but if they start cutting back at 10GB, I say good for them as it gives me faster access.

I would LOVE a tower in my backyard. I rock a 0/1 bar in my house then go out on the porch and it immediately jumps to 3. It makes me sad face. Lead walls?

I'm not at all saying poor Verizon. I am stating though that there are people who abuse the service they pay for and those who violate the Terms of Service contract they legally sign when subscribing to their service. So if VZW wishes to ding NEW customers who would use whatever number VZW deems excessive that is their right.

People who don't like it are free to churn over to T-Mobile who has the loosest data plans around. Good luck making a phone call, but you won't get throttled on data AFAIK.

Sprint has a 70 million customer base, T mobile roughly 33, and att and verizon are for all accounts always within 10% of each other. All told that equates to just under 99% of the US population.

Id love to see sprint's aging network handle 140 million people.
Hell I would love to see Att expand their hdps+ coverage and try to handle 140 million people.

My point being, sprint isn't all that small as you tried to make them out to be with your comparison!

Spring has 48.8 mil subscribers which puts them at roughly half of Verizon's subscriber base. My point being, my original comparison is correct.
