Not entirely the truth... I have had two lines in my name for quite some years. I use them so I have the option of an upgrade once per year. Whenever I upgrade my secondary line, I have always kept an old feature phone around to activate on that line. 6yrs of doing this and no charges. Whenever I go to Verizon, they even suggest I do this because, as stated before, the contract is on the line, not the phone. UNLESS you buy from a third party company ie Amazon Wireless, this should still be true. However, third party places often have their own cancellation procedures. Amazon charges $250 to anyone who buys a phone from them on contract and either cancels their contract or switches to a feature phone like I explained (smartphones).
So, if you don't want to go through Verizons crap, switch to your old phones and simply keep your smartphones as your MP3 player/Tablet (make sure to disable all radios to keep awesome battery life tho)...

Surprising. Not that they haven't charged but that they would actually recommend it. So basically, I have a family share plan with 5 lines, 3 of them are basic phones. So, when each line comes up for upgrade, I can use the upgrade to get a RAZR, or Nexus for $250 our whatever, then put the basic phone back on the line, cancel data, and sell the phone on Ebay for $350 and maker a profit. I am shocked Verizon hasn't put a stop to this possibility.

This phone is far more expensive than imagined. Got caught up in the smart phone thing cuz folks at work are always playing with them. Pre ordered this razr and paid for it on my CC. Just got my 2nd bill. Holy cow $100 more/more than the simple $70/mo plan wife and I were on before. Nearing retirement I need to get out of this completely. I'll plead unemployment (nearly so). Wife is ill as well. So what's my chances after a month of walking away from this and the b.s. contract?

Check the items on the bill. The first bill always contains one-time activation fees that will not occur on subsequent bills. Also, there are many employers listed as having a discount with Verizon. Do you work for one? You can visit the Verizon site to see if your employer qualifies you for a discount. Mine gives me 20% off monthly voice plans.
Also, are you on the lowest voice plan? Can do eliminate or reduce your texting plan?
I doubt you will be able to get out of the contact without the fee. You signed the contract saying you understood the monthly charges.
On another note ... why would you buy something just because you see other people playing with it at work? I see people playing on their iPhones all the time and pitty them for being stuck with such a restrictive device.

Sorry about that but mine has always been correct. You have to read what you are signing. The have a initial activation fee and taxes and all kids of crap. I know I hate it as much as the next person. But is all on the agreement that you sign. And ya the first months bill is outrageous if you have the price of the phone put on your bill also.
U could just sell the phone for around 550. Bucks and get a dumb phone off ebay or craigs list and change u plan to a cheeper one just a calling or what ever u need... Not sure if that's been put out there.

I just might do something like that. I still have 3 moto phones in a drawer that I could easily go back to. I find I'm playing with this razr all the time and zip gets done around. I know! I'll sell this to one of those frustrated nexus guys camping out at VZ right now. Primarily a bunch of college kids and yuppies anyway. not my scene.
