Cellular South Milestone/Droid

The Cellular South Milestone/Droid is the Droid A855 re-branded for regional carriers and given a model number of A854 to differentiate. Aside from the name change it also has a baseband which does NOT lock the data settings to one specific carrier.

DO NOT USE A RADIO UPDATE FROM VERIZON!

So long as you avoid using any SHX/SBF files from Verizon or update.zip files for updating the radio you should be fine. Any reputable ROM developer will have radio updates separate from their ROM so you should be good with any Droid ROM through ROM Manager or on this forum.

Also, you will need to add a custom apns-conf.xml file to /system/etc/ or an apns.xml file to /system/etc/customer/ in order to enable MMS on any third-party ROMs. You may want to check for and pull these files from your stock ROM before you start messing with custom ROMs.

Awesome. However it looks as if I need to do more research before I start. lol

If you need any help, feel free to pm me.

basically use this to root

[APP] [ROOT] 1-click root for N1 (Latest ver: 1.6.1) - xda-developers

Download Rom Manager from the market after you root (premium is the easiest way).

Backup your rom, and backup the sd card to your computer.

open rom manager and download the custom rom and it will more or less do the rest (with premium).

If you get the basic rom manager, you need to manually wipe the cache, and backup and flash.

Question then for those of us on Cellular South:

I'm still under contract with Cellular South, and won't be able to get decent upgrade pricing for well over a year. Since the CellSouth Milestone and Verizon Droid are the same exact phone -- can I buy a Verizon Droid and re-flash the radio for CellSouth? Would that work at all? If so, that would be a much more attractive price than paying $469.

I do not know. I would say not, simply because the phone would not be in the C South system as a C South phone.

I do know a few people that had the Storm running as a Csouth phone. If I am not mistaken though, they had an employee add it into the system manually. I doubt you will find many willing to risk their jobs for that though. lol

Probably not risking their jobs for it -- but I do have a rep that might be able to swing it. I may just end up waiting for the Galaxy S to come out on CellSouth, who knows. Sadly, the Milestone's probably going to be the only Android slider we're gonna get, ever.

Thanks for the reply!

It being the only android with a physical keyboard I see us getting for some time is the main reason that I went with the Milestone. That and the hope that all of the work people have put into custom roms for the verizon droid working with ours. Looks like it paid off for me.

The Galaxy looks great though, and the hummingbird processor is awesome. I wish we were getting the Sprint version though. It does have the keyboard.

I am hoping to do this as well. I'm relatively confident that this will work considering they are the same hardware. Hopefully the cellular south SBF/ radio update.zip will be leaked soon.
