Man I don't know... I might just keep my Pixel 2 another year....i don't see that lag Marques has been seeing... It's still my smoothest experience phone for Android..
I think Google needs to stop following Apple and just be Google. Loved the Nexus phones and the Original Pixel XL and Pixel XL2. They added the Notch on the 3 and I believe that they did not have to. Looking at what I see on the 3 they still left the chin on the bottom and the notch at the top is huge. I am so disappointed with what I have seen with the Pixel 3 XL. If they went without the Notch on the Pixel 3 then they could of done the same with the XL!!! Could of added thinner bezel at the top and bottom. (Rant Over!!!)

I was sort ok with the chin because of the front facing speakers. But that notch though....
I just started an article about all this for my site, but yeah this was my original thought when I was concerned about the pixel 3xl early leaks. It's like when it comes to hardware Google is just mailing it in.
As bezels disappear, there's really not a whole lot you can do to differentiate the looks of the phone. Sure, the fanboys and geeks can always tell the difference, but the average person can't.
That's why you come up with a gimmick like "the notch" so even idiots like me can see that you have a new phone. And in a few years, it goes away so that everyone knows you're using an old phone and you need to upgrade.
Seeing the phone up closer thanks to the recent leaks. I actually love the look of the phone. My money was so ready. But that 4GB of Ram did it for me. So it will either be Note 9 this year or One Plus.
This is the only reason I'm holding off until Oct to pull the trigger on a phone, well that and I am expecting a One Plus 6t. I am still holding on to this slim hope that Google will at least kick the 3XL with 6 gigs of Ram or more. The recent leaks snuffed most of that out, but I'm still holding out.
I wasn't opposed to the notch. Played with a G7 several times with the simulated notch and it didn't bother me. But that notch on the P3 XL. That's the Grand Canyon of notches.
And have we really reached a time where 4gb of RAM isn't enough? Guess I might be a little behind the times.
