credit card # stolen on market, BEWARE

oh ok, thanks. Been off the grid (as far as having any sort of paper trail) for like 5 years... turns out they want credit history if u want to buy a house... who knew

I'm so glad for this thread. I found a few small google purchases that I did NOT make on my bank statement with no order number listed or vendor. I've since cancelled my check card and got a new one.

Going forward I will purchase gift cards that I can use for these kinds of transactions. I was stupid to jeopardize my income but I'm glad I was able to stop this before the illegal debits were bigger than $5 a pop.

Thanks again for sharing your unfortunate experience. It helped me.

On another note, I did notice that the Beautiful Widgets app keeps charging me .99 in british money every once in a while and I noticed that it corresponds with each update, so I'd advise anyone/everyone who purchases anything and gets updates, to make sure they are not being charged over and over per updates.

If I'm to re-buy anything every time they are updated, that should have been made clear in the purchase. I don't need to pay almost $2.00 per update to use this. Over time it's not worth the cost--it adds up and in this time and day, $2 can tip an already dicey bank account over to the red side. *grimsmile*

Lastly, I still have NOT received any refunds on any app purchases I've made and uninstalled/requested refund. The vendor says they didn't receive the money and my bank shows the purchases complete with no refunds showing.

I'm now out about $50-60 over the past several months. Not a lot to some, but things are tough and tight for me right now--no need to get into my personal business but I'm just stating that because if anyone else is trying to make it through this recession like me, $50plus can do much more for me right now, rather than be put into someone's pockets that didn't earn it.

WAAA??? Anyone else notice this? I was thinking about getting Beautiful Widgets but not if this is 'SOP.' But that brings up a good question... I've not yet 'bought' any apps (was waiting till after 2.1 OTA to spend money on apps) but is there a 'SOP' for the market place as to purchasing and how updates or new versions are handled (i.e. if I buy an app today and they release a new version tomorrow or the next day, am I just out the $ or what or is it at the discretion of the app provider)?

HEY: Please tell us what apps / what companies, so we can be aware of this.

Also, I am a merchant account holder. IF you file a dispute for a charge within 90 days, the charge will be immediately reversed until the merchant is able to prove the request and delivery of the product and/or service. After 90 days, you are screwed.

You may have to jump though a few hoops, like your bank may request that you call the merchant and request a refund first, but if it is within 90 days, an you have a USA bank Visa/MC/DISC/AMEX, you are totally covered, and will get all your $ back.

PS: Many banks will also try to upsell you on "protection" from events like this: it's BS. By US law, you are covered, no matter what; it is their responsibility. "Don't drink the kool aid.

I believe Papal is shorter, FYI. I just had my first experience with a bad transaction. I ordered at the end of December. A few days went by and I figured Xmas shortage. Then it was the middle of Jan so I sent them an Email with no response.

That's when I went to Papal. If you use it check out the significant dates. I can't recall what they are, but I know they were shorter than I expected. I immediately opened up a dispute and the first stop was to contact the vendor through them which I did. I thought for sure that I'd get a response then. I waited a week, but nothing.

I sent out a second email via Papal, not so nice this time giving them 48 hours to respond before I'd escalate. Still no response. I then escalated within Paypal and submitted a claim, that didn't generate an email from the vendor.

However, three days later I received a priority mail with my goods. Love the product, not sure if I'd ever use the Vendor again. I'm so used to ordering online and being amazed at the speed things arrive that I tend not to worry about orders. This was a wakeup call.

Nothing is safe in this high tech world....Beware, people, Beware!!!

i got a wal mart visa just for droid since apps cannot be billed, have many apps with no probs, then i got one or 2 from UK, (still trying to find out wich one it is), then all of a sudden i notice 99 cents i didnt charge, once or twice, then all of a sudden 29.94, 30 bux, another 30 bux, gone from random places and websites in UK, this is no joke i will provide any help/proof needed, no slander of google or market here , people just need to be aware this happened, bc it mocked app prices for a month before i caught on , check your statements!!:icon_evil:

Just had the same thing happen. I bought some apps (SetCPU, Root Explorer, and some other apps) from the Market. I refunded all but SetCPU and Root Explorer. 2 days later I bought another app to try and the purchase was declined. I then got an email from my bank about fraud activity and I had to call the bank, answer security questions, etc. Some of the apps were in the UK. All were 4+ star ratings and seemed legit but who knows where the info is really going.

There were two purchases - made at the other end of the country - made at Target stores for ~$250 and $120.

I now have no card for a week while a new one is sent out (luckily, I have other cards to use for gas/food until this one arrives). The fraud dept. identified and denied the purchases before any damage was done; but, it's still an inconvenience and makes me more paranoid about buying apps in the future.

Now, I don't have proof that my info was leaked from buying apps; but, that's the only 'new' thing I've been doing lately with my credit card. I haven't had any other problems in the past using it for groceries, monthly bills, etc. The fact that the fraud happened within a week of my first app purchases makes me more suspicious.

If anyone has a better explanation or has had similar issues, I'd definitely like to hear it because I'd rather this just be paranoia.

Thanks to the op for this thread. And i use a prepaid card for my purchases on the app market. And this should be a sticky for everyone, especially those new to smartphones and market purchases.

Agreed. I stupidly used the CC I already had stored on Google Checkout. When in doubt, use separate, prepaid cards. LFMF (Learn From My Fail).

yes probally other apps stealing info. stored on phone and sending out to whoever, thats why permissions need to be set for apps.

agreed lots of good apps out there and developers. nothing is totally secure, we do what we can. but always a few bad ones that spoil it for the many.
had my card info stolen and used. i only made one purcase with it in six months and nothing after that for 2. the charges were removed all turned out ok.
