credit card # stolen on market, BEWARE

i'm not convinced this is a real issue...as far as cc info being compromised in relation to an app store purchase. if so, why isn't it happening more often?

if cc info is being compromised it must be happening in some other way not related to the market purchases. google is the only entity that has access to the credit card info anyway...

When using online shopping, I use a Discover Card that has security via their website that creates a one time use number that cannot be compromised but is attached to my card. If someone tries to use the dummy number after one use, it is rejected...

I use this for ALL online purchases and it has not failed me yet.

This is a very interesting subject revolving around strange fraud/hacking-like instances related to the UK. My situation is most likely completely UNRELATED to this google checkout situation but it is possible and sparks much interest for me...

Last week I had been messing with sweeterhome beta a lot, dling new themes and customizing my phone. A lot of themes were made to have Beautiful Widgets so I purchased it last Wednesday (Jan 14). The last app I purchased before Beautiful Widgets was a full month before and I've only purchased 3 apps that were from the UK (Beautiful Widgets, GRE, and What the Doodle?).

Two days later on Friday, Jan 16th, I woke up at 6am (PST) to get ready for work to find that my g-mail and facebook wouldn't sync on my phone due to a wrong password. Long story short, someone in the UK hacked into my g-mail and facebook accounts, changed the passwords and backup e-mail addresses on both accounts making it extremely difficult for me to get my accounts back (I had to fill out difficult questionaires and wait for responses, etc to get it back which took half a day). The hacker was e-mailing all my contacts asking for money to be wired to the UK, claiming that I had gone to London without telling anybody and that I got mugged and can't fly back and needing money asap. On top of that, he was chatting with my friends for the same reason using facebook's messaging system and AIM (since my AIM logs on whenever I sign into gmail) so that's how I knew it was an actual person and not a bot.

So even though it unlikely has to do with google checkout, I find it sooo strange that the only accounts that got hacked were my g-mail and facebook accounts. My online bank and credit card accounts had the same password, yet they were not compromised (and my droid only syncs and stores my g-mail and facebook accounts). I called the credit card company that I use for Google Checkout and they told me the only pending charge was the one for Beautiful Widgets coming from the UK. They've issued me a new credit card and thank goodness, I haven't had issues since.

This is so strange! (btw I hadn't downloaded anything on my computer for a long time before that so I don't want to blame it on a virus or worm)

Wow...I was thinking about getting one of these Droid things, but now I've got serious reservations.

dont, its just as un safe as ANY internet charges, if they want your info they will get it from any site, GET A DROID, you will love it, just check your statements, no biggie

I plan to just add the $100 debit card from verizon for buying the phone to my google account adn if you buy over $100 of paid apps, you are way too addicted.

Just out of curiosity.........when you put your credit card # in...........were you using Swype, or the stock Android keyboard?

And there folks, lies the problem.

Evilsock most likely has (or had at the time) a compromised computer. I am almost certain of it.

google has emailed me back and admited fault and that their server may be comprimised they are aware , and working, they have ZERO problem refunding me everything even if visaor wal mart wouldnt, wich they did, but google stands by their work, and responded quickly, i stress to EVERYONE CHECK YOUR STATEMENTS NOW and see , count apps if u have to bc if it happened once , it will happen again, as they said , it says secure, but nothing with an internet connection is 100 % safe

I use my bank checkcard so this is completely worrying to me. Tomorrow I"m requesting a new card and number will check my back purchases through the market.

I don't want this stopping me from getting market items that help me utilize my droid better, but I certainly can't afford to compromise my money for it! And I like that idea of getting a Walmart card specifically for my droid purchases--brilliant idea. Thanks for sharing that. :)

I've had some small purchases that have yet to be credited back to me from the market, matter of fact. Gonna look into that some more.

I was wondering if the OP used his phone or his computer. I've had Google checkout for a couple of years. So I went on to delete all my real CC and added a $25 visa gift card. Interestingly, there is now a transaction for $1 on it. I hadn't seen this with a real card (that I was aware of). I was thinking that it was posting a dummy authorization to verify it was a valid card.

The other folks that have had fraudulent transactions-did you use your phone or your computer??

My visa just got violated in the UK as well. The ONLY 2 times I have used this card is in the Market, and the only apps purchased with it were from the UK.
Chase notified me of a $1.00 test charge to a UK charity fund. They stated this seems to be a common thing for them to do a 'test' charge to see if the card is functional.

The apps I purchased were Camera Zoom FX and Pure Calendar Widget.
