Did Apple Do It Wrong - The State of Smartwatches

Apple will continue to lag behind Samsung and copy.
And people will continue to buy them as they are fashion accessories and one must have the latest fashion. :D

While bloggers world wide continue to support them and spin it off as Samsung being the copiers.

Their watch has been gimped. They slashed tons of features since they were shooting for the moon straight out of the gate. It's square as well which is something I can't wrap my brain around.

The square reminds me of my old Casio Databank watch. A phone book and calculator on your wrist? Man oh man that was the epitome of cutting edge back then. Didn't matter the buttons were so small you couldn't use them and the screen was so tiny the fonts were impossible to see clearly.
All the [emoji520]watch needs now is Indiglo and they'll pull in millions of middle aged, over the hill but haven't realized it yet, after baby boomer generation , shoppers.

Yeah those square watches scream Casio calculator watch to me, but I am willing to bet the young whippersnappers have no idea of what they were. I just can't break the association that I have attached to the new fangled square watches.

I am waiting for Tissot and Tag to bring theirs out.

True that. Physical buttons are so last century. This will be the new norm for us old timers whether we like it or not.

For you old timers. Unless I am gifted a watch this old timer will continue to use his phone for a clock. Watches aren't my thing.

I like my square G watch. Of course, I was always a bit jealous of people with those calculator watches. Haha!

That said, I'm highly interested in a decent round smartwatch. I like the overall look of the Moto, but I hate the "flat tire" at the bottom. Maybe having one would change my mind about it, but that's my gut reaction. I'm not sure I've actually seen one in person, though I've watched plenty of videos on them.

That said, I think apple did what apple was always going to do. I'm interested to see how it pans out. I think, as others have said in other threads, it will be popular with the hardcore ios folks. I'm waiting to see the mainstream though. I'm pretty sure it'll be similar to android wear, where only we really nerdy folks pick them up. Haha!

Although, I know there are a lot of celebs that use iphone, so maybe those folks with their ridiculous amounts of disposable income will push it into mainstream.

Time will tell. I do kinda think it's too little too late at this point in the game, but people who don't know any better won't care.

The fact that I get asked once in a while if my android wear g watch is an apple watch says something about their marketing and their power over "sheepish" consumers.

Jonny,I was like that with pdas. I think that's why I was so intrigued by the Note series once I got past seeing my first Note leather cover that I thought had accidentally been placed in the Samsung cover area of Best Buy instead of the Kindle section. I really did pick it up and imagined what it'd look like on my Kindle, looked for its price and that's when I saw it was for the Note1.
Ollie I stopped wearing watches back when many members here weren't even a gleam in their daddy's eye yet and it wasn't until the 360R was first pre sale announced that I even fathomed changing that stance. I'm horrible on watches, couldn't see myself not destroying a smartwatch inside a month. The chrome bezel on my Fit has a bunch of dings on it, the S band clasp is scraped up already but the screens are fine on both, something I cannot say for any of my real watches or heart rate monitor watch.

I had a huge pda phone back around '04. Think it was made by LG. Only phone I ever carried in my back pocket. I had no choice. That's the only place it would fit. Had kinda like a folio case for it. My friends called it my purse, but I could watch videos on my cell phone well before they ever dreamed of it. ;)

The s pen and S View cover helped me get over myself when I got the Note4. All I need now is a Bonephone and I'll die totally electronics content. Bonephone was a set of headphones that didn't have speakers but instead the sound vibrated up the neck to the inner ear bone. I can't find it now but I read am article late last year that a company in Korea has launched something like them but they're only available there.

Sounds like what Sharp did with the Aquos by making the sound transmit through the screen instead of a speaker.

The Aquos was (is) a TV.

I think most tellys nowadays don't have speakers as such and the sound is transmitted through the screen.

Wrong compared to what? The Android wear market which has barely moved one million units, despite its lower selling price?

Android Wear is not a "brand" and will never take off like Apple's watch will. I own several Apple devices and even though they rarely bring anything new to the table when they are launched Apple's spin machine has people lining up for stuff. It's still somewhat mind blowing to me.

The main problem I see is a marketing issue. I have not seen any advertising or promotion from anyone with regards to Android Wear. Any buzz is purely from the early adopters and enthusiasts. The general populace is probably still unaware the is such a thing as an android wear device.

Conversely, Apple is sparing no expense in promoting their apple watch, from fashion models to magazine covers to exclusive retail stores. They will ensure that it is properly supported by the various stakeholders. This is how you build up a thriving ecosystem around a product and ensure its survival.
