It is confusing, and the announcement certainly didn't clarify anything. The official 2.1 at this point has not been rooted, but there is an "official" 2.1 rom with root. Bottom line, if you have 2.1 you cannot use droidmod to gain root, nor any other previous method. You basically have to use 2.01 to root.
So, DroidMod has announced they are not going to waste effort trying to root 2.1 when there are existing ways of rooting. Makes perfect sense, if you can figure out why
Well, eventually phones are going to all be stock 2.1 and Droidmod is suggesting that you take a stock phone and downgrade it in order to get their ROM, I suppose. One of the things that I liked about Droidmod is how simple it was to use as opposed to any other ROM which is out there. By not even bothering to root 2.1 their own ROM is going to lose popularity. All anybody will want from them is DMupdater after they downgrade, imho, so they can easily root and get another ROM.
As far as I know 2.1 hasn't been rooted yet, by anyone. I'd rather them develop roms than work on gaining root. Especially considering anyone running DroidMod has no extra steps once they release a new ROM.
bill, you'd only be "downgrading" in order to upgrade. And that's only if you're running stock 2.1. There's no other way to do it right now on stock 2.1.
Why would anyone want to run a stock rooted 2.1 when they could have the superior Ultimate Droid 9.8? I'll take Blackdroid over Google's developers any day. He's truly outdone himself with 9.8.
Exactly. . . Get rid of that downgrade step... someone will either root the stock 2.1(I still call that dm has lost their coding expert in this regard), or someone else will.
DM may not be working on rooting 2.1.... but it's likely someone, somewhere is.
2.1 does have more security (the OTA) than 2.0.1 did. IMO, this is why there's no 'push' for rooting it. We have a way to access root and most users were rooted before the OTA.
I think, and may be way off base, as more people purchase the Droid, with 2.1 already installed... there will be a need for a root exploit... but for now I don't see the 'push' for it.
So I updated to the latest DroidMod ROM but now my smoked glass theme is gone. I installed metamorph and it's wanting me to pick one from a folder called Android Themes but it's empty. Searched the market for smoked glass & nothing. Where do I find themes and what filetype suffix should I be looking for?
I found that thread in my own searches but the link for Smoked Glass seems busted. When I click from my Droid browser I just get an error message.
Also, I found another place and downloaded a zipper file. I then attempted to extract and after waiting several minutes there wasn't much progress so I clicked cancel. Now there are some random files in there so before I go downloading anything else and I safe to delete EVERYTHING in that folder? I just don't want to delete anything that was supposed to be there but want to clean it up before I download more files to that folder.
