Droid Bionic or Droid X

I'm in the same boat as you. I have a Alias 2 and will be upgrading to smart phone. I had two phones in mind which was the Thunderbolt or Bionic. Since the official specs came out 1/6/2011 I've decided to go with the Bionic.

Droid X is still VERY relevant but if you are looking for the latest hardware I'd definitely wait for the Bionic. If you don't care about the latest and greatest I think the X is a GREAT choice.

From what I read, the data plan is $50 for 5GB of Data, and $80 for 10GB of Data, and $10 for every GB over your plan.

Suddenly, I am appreciating my $30 a month unlimited 3G plan even more. That's the price you early adopters pay for new technology.

Want 4g LTE the best processor.1080p video vs 720p and a little higher res screen (854 X 480 Vs 960 X 540)? Wait a few months for the bionic. Want a processor thats still blazing fast? A still great screen and more then adequate 3g speeds? Get the X. Both 8mp cameras
Also, who knows how locked down the Bionic will be.. Some people have been saying it doesnt have motoblur, but it does. just a new version of it.

You will be able to use the Bionic with 3G, but will you be forced to purchase a 4G plan (the same way data plans are "required" on smartphones). I find it incredibly hard to believe that VZW would spend time/money developing this, and then give it away for "free" (the same price as 3G plans). I hope I'm wrong.

I balked at the $30 data plan. I do not want to spend more than that.

I think we'll all be in for a shock when they release their data rates/plans. Greed drives their business model and this 4G development isn't being given to us out of the kindness of their heart.

Sprint led the way when they added their $10/month 4G surcharge. VZW will certainly want to recover all of their costs, and then some, associated with 4G.

The droid X is very nice, so if you don't want to wait, I say go for it. You'll be happy with it for a year or two easily.

The Bionic does look great though, if they optimize quickly for it's dual core, it will dramatically increase the speed of the phone. Ask anyone who's built computers from the time they jumped from single core CPU's to dual cores, once programs were optimized you saw a 60%+ increase in performance and I imagine it will be similar for phones as well.

Even if you don't optimize, anything that requires multitasking is going to benefit from having multiple cores available, even if your unoptimized games don't get faster.

I don't want more expensive data plans though. If the bionic forces me to pay more for data I don't know what I'll do.

i am in the same boat as you. if you are REQUIRED to get a 4G plan, then it'll be pointless to get the new phones. i use data way too much to have a limited plan haha.

I'd wait if I were you. The Bionic is twice the phone the X is. Release date looks like April at the earliest. Read the new Bionic thread that's up in here.

The bionic has two cores clocked at 1 ghz each, 4.3 " with qhd display, 4g, better camera once again megapixels don't mean battery picture. That's already enough for me to accept the advanced upgrades.

Care to elaborate? I dont see how the Bionic is 2x the phone the X is. The bionic would need a 12mp camera, 4.3 inch screen full HD 1.5-2ghz dual core tegra 2, and android honeycomb preloaded to be twice the phone the x is imo.

Well i won't be getting the money in to buy the X for at least another 2 weeks so i have time decide. I just need to know if the bionic can go 3G hehe, i'm sure thats a deciding factor for a lot of people.
