Droid Insurance? yay or nay?

I am thinking that I will keep the insurance until next fall when I will likely do an early upgrade to the Droid 2 or whatever else is the latest and greatest. Then, having the Droid available if needed, I might not worry with carrying insurance on the next phone. I know I could likely sell the Droid at that time, but I do like having backup phones especially with 5 phones on my plan, although mine is the only smartphone at the present time, although by fall my wife will likely have one too.

No insurance for me. My last phone for 2 years did not even have a scratch.

I am hoping if something goes wrong it will happen under the manufacture warranty.

I would like to challenge you to show me where the VZW insurance does NOT cover for water damage. Truth is, it does cover water and physical damage. You might have this insurance confused with one that Best Buy offers...which is not the VZW one with Asurion.

Boy, someone is going to go after VZW and/or Asurion for false advertising:
http://www.phoneclaim.com/doc_list/doc_view/754-ALL_brochure?tmpl=component&format=raw
You'll see on the cover of the brochure that it says it covers "Liquid Damage" BUT if you read through the brochure on page 32 you'll find the VZW "extended warranty" informaion: Part B, Section IV, Item G excludes "Defects or damage due to spills of or immersion in food or liquid." I know from experience with Asurion that their coverage does NOT cover water/liquid damage (they make the perfectly clear when you file a damage claim). So if Asurion doesn't cover it, and the VZW "Extended Warranty" doesn't cover it I would say that it is not covered under the plan. Seems like someone would have an easy time in court with this given the statement to the contrary on the cover of the brochure.

If I'm wrong someone please set us straight (but I'm weird, I like written proof/policy to substantiate claims).

That said you can "loose the phone" (though I'm in no way advocating insurance fraud:icon_ devil:).
I see where this can sound confusing. As was pointed out after your posting, what you were reading about was the $1.99 warranty only.

To substantiate what I know about the Asurion insurance from VZW, there are actually two things. I dealt with Asurion as a VZW CS Rep for almost 3 years, the second one happened to me personally. I got the LG Voyager as an upgrade about 3 years ago, I wasn't thrilled with it because of its size and the fact I really wasn't watching the TV on it so I decided to swap it out on the 30th day and get my first BB Curve. I should have put the Voyager back in the box on day 29 and ship it out but I took it to work at my call center. I was at lunch in the cafeteria, got a cup of cream of mushroom soup, put it on the table, pulled the Voyager out of my pocket, and in slow motion (to me) I watched it fall like a bullet out of my hand directly into the soup. I grabbed the phone and watched the front display shut down. I couldn't believe it happened. I took it home that evening and my wife was digging mushrooms out of the charging port. Thankfully I had Asurion, gave them a call, and they sent me a replacement phone (luck of the draw it was brand new). Since I was no longer eligible to upgrade since I had to file the insurance claim, I used my son's eligible upgrade and got the BB Curve and sold the Voyager on eBay and it paid for the Curve.

This is how I personally know that Asurion will cover for water/liquid damage.

I was 45 years old before I had something happen to a phone (read my reply above this one). Started out with the bag phones. You never know when it's going to happen to you. I was 48 years old in September when I was in a car accident, at fault, for the first time in my life. Thankfully both those times I had insurance!

I've had insurance on every cell phone I've had (including some basic ones) and never needed it. If it helps your peace of mind, get it. That being said, yes, I have insurance on the Droid.

Just get insurance. These devices are so expensive that if you drop it and it breaks, the 7 bucks a month is just worth it instead of forking up 500+ dollars.

These things are expensive. its worth the peace of mind.

This is the first time I have gotten phone insurance. I have the $8.99 version. I had to work way to hard to convince my wife to let me get a Droid.

If something happened to my phone I would NEVER be able to get another one. It would be back to the Razr :icon_eek:

Here is how I see it. While I only spent the subsidized price for the phone, if it breaks in the next few months I will have to pay full retail price to get a new one. Or I can pay $7 a month ($126) for 18 months (the next NE2 upgrade date) plus a $89 deductible. My total cost for a new phone would be only $215. In reality it would be less than that as the insurance payout would only be until you replaced the device. So if it broke 10 months into the 18 months my cost would be $159 and so on.

Even a basic flip phone can cost $200+ for retail.

For those recommending private insurance beware of unintentional consequences. Making a claim with your private insurance agency can affect your rates for years to come. Think about it.

I got the Asurion only. Didn't need to extend the manufacturers warranty by a year as my credit card already doubles the manufacturers warranty.

And I wouldn't think of not having it. It is a small price to pay for the piece of mind knowing if something totally off the wall happened that I won't be out $500+

No insurance for my wife's and I droids. As much as we love our Droids if it gets lost, stolen or broken we would just finish our contract out with the cheapest phone possible at that point. With as many gadgets as I have had I have never needed insurance for them when I had it.
