Droid noob here - Thunderbolt or X2?

I own a Thunderbolt and like it very much, but apparently other people have been having quite terrible experiences with it (bad battery life, no connectivity, reboots, etc.). I wouldn't get an X2 because I cannot stand the PenTile display, MotoBlur, or the phone's design. So I wouldn't recommend either.

Here's what I would do. If you like the Thunderbolt, need a phone now and can deal without 4G, get an Incredible 2. It's just like a Thunderbolt, but slightly smaller and less bug-ridden.

Or, wait until an update for the Thunderbolt comes out. If it puts all of these issues to bed, then by all means get it.

If you want the next big thing, wait a month or two. Rumor is the Galaxy S II is coming to Verizon this summer, and that phone has been getting rave reviews all over the net. The Droid Bionic/Targa is also coming this summer as well.

I have a thunderbolt, imediatly rooted and romed it. I dont have 4g where i live so i turn that off, lower my screen briteness. Use wify when available and easily get a full day. If im going out or working i put on car charger. I have never ran under 30%

I'd got with the DX². Its much better out of the box. Or if you want a keyboard, the Droid³ should be launching sometime this month.

Let me get this, a dual core phone gets better battery life than a single core TB, right? Must be due to the 4G on TB. I will take 4G over a quad core any day.

X2 has a 1540 battery the TB has a 1400, which is way too small in capacity for a phone of the TBs caliber.

I owned the x2 and returned it for an incredible2. The x2 benchmarks are great, but in real use it was slower than my d1.

I have had my TB since launch day, and I can honestly say that I have been dissapointed in it. Before the update, poor signal quality, signal retention issues, glitches out the wazoo, and the old 768mb of ram is REALLY starting to show on android phones like this. After the update, random reboots, poor signal quality, bad signal retention and still bad battery life. I can place my phone next to a droid2, two droid x's, and a OG, and mine will always get the WORST signal, and yes that is in decibal measurements. Im running a extended battery and a seido convert on mine, and it is MASSIVE!! Not a big deal to me, because I holster mine, but to each his own.

If I were you I would consider waiting until Verizon officially announces an end date to unlimited 4g for the 30 bucks a month price. Because right now there is really nothing that IS LTE that is worth it IMO. If you can wait, then pounce on the first phone with dual core, 1gb of ram, and LTE. That is if its got the unlimited 4G data. LTE wont be unlimited by august...

The thunderbolt, just based on specs is superior to the other LTE phones in big red's line up, but like i said thats just my opinion.

Good luck!

Excellent post and I couldn't agree more.

The phone is clearly the best that VZW has to offer but they definitely did not make this phone with excellence in mind. I could see myself using this phone for a long while without concern of what else is on the market but, if you do value some of the latest features, e.g. video recording, thin v. battery life, gaming, etc. then you should wait.

Do note this - the corporate folks at VZW aren't stupid and they will look to squeeze every penny they can. I'd be wary of them pulling the plug immediately and offering only tiered 4G plans for any new phone purchased as soon as the dual core phones with 1GB of RAM are released.

And I agree - if the Bionic has only 512MB of RAM as was originally reported (I hear it has been changed), I would never have signed onto that phone even if it was quad core. Nice post. Best of luck to the OP.

Thanks slinky, Im just trying to help.

And to the OP, also take note that the MR2 update is supposedly releasing this week(tomorrow is what ive read somewhere on here), and it will fix most of the issues with the thunderbolt. The poor battery life, the signal issue, the GPS locking lag, etc, etc,. It should fix most, if not all of our moans and groans on this device. If you're ancy, just wait and see how folks are taking it by the weekend. This phones are not the worst ever, but the could've had so much more.

In reality, I think this is because they had this device in R&D so long it got so long in the tooth by the time it released. Even accounting for the usual painfully long testing/approval process that their phones go through, the thunderbolt's was considerably longer. As a result, it launched way to late, and we now see the results of that in the EVO3D and Sensation handsets, which is what this phone could have been.

Oh well, its not all bad. Maybe I'll stop complaining after the OTA comes out.

Thanks for the feedback. I don't know why I'm obsessing over this so much - lol! I'm thinking I'll wait to see if there's some magic Bionic announcement soon (assuming it's all we hope it's going to be), and fall back on the TB if not. If it comes down to Bionic=tiered data plan, I'll skip it. I'm sure I'd be very happy with the Thunderbolt.

Appreciate all the input!

The Bionic doesn't look like it's going to be that great, looks to have some flaws..but who knows. The SGS2 and Inc2 are the only phones I am considering right now.

the thunderbolt has its flaws definitely. You can read the forums here to see. There's ways to mitigate those flaws however (extended battery, rooting and custom rom). If you're thinking of the X2, I'd really check it out in a store first. It has a severely pixelated screen, might be a little clunky speed-wise with blur and is still locked down.

Another great.... post I saw the x2 and don't like it one bit and I said in another post the thunderbolt is imo the best phone Verizon has out right now but this bionic could be good and I won't buy a Samsung HTC and MOTO are great at supporting there devices but after seeing the x2 I'm doubting the bionic will be the phone everyone is looking for.

Dinc2, Droid 3 and maybe the Bionic are on my list. Just waiting to see the reviews on the Motos. If they are anything like the dx2 I am passing. I know the dinc2 is a good device. I am going to pass on Samsung and the GS2 after the issues I have been having with the GPS on the Fassy.
