DROID Turbo Can’t Currently do Simultaneous Voice and Data!

I'm 100% sure you could do simultaneous data and voice on Thunderbolt whether you were on 3g or lte, it could do both as I remember att running ads at the time boasting like they were special because of it and I laughed cause so could I. Here is an article droid life did back then about it HTC Thunderbolt Can Handle Data and Voice Over 3G Why Not Announce it Droid Life

yeah it had 2 3g antennas and some sort of mimo setup... good stuff.

this is definitely off topic, I just want to share.

number 2 especially... I've got a short story I hope you find amusing, since this is DF I'll keep it PG...

I had a neighbor, not a particularly smart guy, not very nice either. so... He's moving, he asked for some help to get some heavy things in his trailer. sure I'll help. we finish moving the stuff and he's all "Thanks man, I've got a question for you."

me: "alright shoot"
him: you're good with computers right?
me: yeah, (at this point I'm thinking he wants me to fix something or... honestly no idea, I'm just waiting for the shoe to drop)
him: can you hack things? like... passwords?
me: umm... well... sort of... (of course I'm not telling him most passwords are easy enough to guess, I'm not a hacker by ANY stretch of the imagination, just an advanced user with some basic coding knowledge.)
him: so, you could hack into.... say.... a cable signal? get free videos and stuff?
me: I guess I could try, what are you wanting free movies? I'll point you in the right direction to download them, but I won't help you figure it out.
him: no no no... I'm just asking because there was some charges for some adult videos on my cable bill, figured maybe you hacked my cable and were watching some videos!

now at this point I'm trying not to laugh in his face... I'm literally ROFLMAO inside...

me: NO dude, I can get that for free online, no need to EVER pay for porn... maybe you should ask your 13 year old son.

him: I did... he said he didn't do it!!! (he's visibly upset at the prospect of his son watching naked people, I could see it on his face, absolute mortification)
me: well... it wasn't me, sorry man... call them and see if they'll refund it.

then I walk away.

honestly, it's shocking how stupid people can be... I went inside and didn't stop laughing about it for 10 minutes.

I was under the impression that VoLTE was rolling out in phases and not even ready for use in all areas. Is that not the case?

To be honest, I haven't paid much attention to the news about it, because it's been the way it is for so long. Sure, it'll be nice to be on the phone and be able to look something up without having to be connected to wifi, but I've made it this far with the current limitations.
It is here in Raleigh, North Carolina.

turbo-voice-data.jpg

New DROID Turbo owners need to be aware of a feature that isn’t currently available on their device, but will be by the end of the year – simultaneous voice and data. We are not sure why the device isn’t capable of simultaneous voice and data out of the box, but Verizon has confirmed that Advanced Calling 1.0 which is VoLTE is required for it to work. Verizon has also confirmed that Advanced Calling 1.0 will arrive for the device by the end of the year.

Knowing this, will you still purchase The Droid Turbo from Verizon, wait until the update to purchase it, or choose another phone such as Nexus 6 or Galaxy Note 4?

Wish I hadn't. Bought TURBO Ballistic 64 gb phone when the doors opened on the 30th. And on that day alone I instinctively tried using this feature like 5 times within only a couple hours of owning it. I called Moto and Verizon and no one could really give me answers. Although Moto did say it was fully capable of simultaneous voice data use and Verizon was known to disable whatever they wanted. I've only got 14 days to return this thing and I can't decide what I should do; Hope there actually will be an update and keep it, or return it and miss out on the double the data sale vzw had until yesterday (30gb for $130 instead of 16gb)

It's not a flaw of the phone. The problem is that this phone only has one radio, the 4G radio with the next generation protocols. Since it is a 4G radio with the next generation protocols it is capable of voice and data transmission but only across the new VOLTE (Voice Over LTE), network protocol which is rolling out now across the Verizon network . According to Motorola and Verizon an update should come by the end of the year that will bring that phone into VOLTE and enable simultaneous voice and data for you. Unfortunately that may be too long for you to wait, but I would hope that using simultaneous voice and data was not a huge part of your daily routine and so the minor inconvenience shouldn't be enough to cause you to have to return the phone.

I've been doing it since early 2011 when Verizon released htc Thunderbolt.
I just don't understand how they could miss this when their earlier phones worked just fine out of the gates.
I agree. I've had this feature for years in my Droids and the S5 too. Seems like I'm stepping back in time really. I use this feature multiple times daily. The day ibrevieved the phone i coukdnt find a store and called hubby and he couldn't help so I tried to Google while on the phone. Perfeft tike to figure out this isnt active on the Turbo. Work calls to verify a sent email, kids call to make sure you got that goofy Snapchat, friends call to make sure you got an invite on FB..in use this simultaneous feature constantly. I'm so mad.

Sadly for a super busy working gal who is a champion multitasker, this feature is used constantly for me

An Update is coming in December. My brother wants the Turbo also. He was upset over the lack of Voice and data. I told him to get it because the update is coming. I am wondering if Motorola rushed it out to Get to the Nexus 6?

I don't think it's due to being rushed. I'm pretty sure not having the phone launch with VoLTE is on Verizon, not Motorola. They've been rolling out support much slower than they originally planned. There have been issues with getting everything up and running.

As for the phone not being able to do voice and data on CDMA and LTE, I think it's because Verizon expected to be able to have the phone doing VoLTE at launch when Motorola was in the design stages of the phone. If that was the original plan, there wouldn't be much of a reason to include the hardware needed to do simultaneous voice over CDMA and data over LTE.

So wouldn't it have been better to delay the release until all the issues are fixed and everything is up and running correctly.

I hear you ChristiLock. There are certainly situations where that temporary situation will cause an inconvenience at a minimum and could result in more than just an inconvenience. As mentioned, if you're in the middle of navigation and the phone rings, it could result in directions being interrupted.

There are ways around some of this. For instance when navigating you can instruct the phone to download the entire route first, then you can navigate offline and still talk on the phone. As for being able to browse and search on the web while on a call, well that's not happening. Streaming music or video, no go there either. But most everything else is a non-issue.

For me, just knowing of the limitation will allow me to make minor changes to how I use the device in the interim. In other words it's just another detour temporarily.

They're working on a major road near my home which is the most direct route to my office. It's been a couple months that it's closed and I've had to take a detour. I've been frustrated but have dealt with it all for the benefit of advancement and improvement of the roadway. Just the other day however I discovered as a result of the detour that there's an even better way to go which avoids school zones for me and keeps me out of the school bus routes so it's actually faster and with less turns, lights and delays than either the detour or my original route...the one Google Maps chose as the fastest.

Sometimes detours are good. In this case it will be an inconvenience but unless you use the phone for voice calls and at the same time are surfing, streaming out otherwise needing data simultaneously it is a minor inconvenience and it will be resolved.

Well put, bsweetness. In other words the plan would have been in place in the early stages of developing the phone's hardware by Motorola.

@Preach, to completely redesign the architecture to retrofit it with the CDMA radio at the last minute due to Verizon's shortcomings would have resulted in a delay that might have even been longer than it will take to get the upgrade in place. To delay its release would have resulted in millions in lost sales and might have actually not gotten the working product out there any faster.

For all we know the release of the phone in this manner may have been a contractual obligation on Motorola by Verizon.
