how do you do what you did?

I have Handcent working on the DROID without problem. A few notes:

You have to turn off stock messager notifications.
You can't get rid of the MMS.APK because Handcent and ChompSMS both use the core functionality.

Go into the "Messages" app.
Hit the menu button.
Press "Settings."
Scroll down and uncheck "Received notification."
