From Liberty 2.0.1, Stock, Apex, CM7, etc. (ANY ROM) to Liberty GB

I had the exact same issue with v.08 and v.09 when I tried to install either one from the toolbox (this was when the roms were available in the toolbox, and I was on the .596 build). The only way out of it was to sbf. Which I had to do twice... the Toolbox .596 works, but only if you are starting from a rooted Froyo. I did it, it worked. From there I tried to download Liberty .08 from the zip I still had on my sdcard (since it was no longer in the toolbox), and AGAIN i ended up with the Yellow Fist of Death, lol. Had to sbf again and start back at Froyo. I just rooted and am now going to use the Toolbox to get back to Gingerbread, since I know that it works.

However, I think I'm going to refrain from flashing anymore Liberty ROMS of any kind until these kinks are worked out. Kinda tired of my phone freezing up...

Try using the 2-part rooted gb in the instructions. I've never had that method fail.

I did do the 2-part rooted from TBH. I followed directions exactly, i'd even record a video of me doing this process lol, i really wish it would work.

Maybe you got a corrupt download of one of the files. Try downloading them again. Also post the file size and/or md5 sum of the 2-part files and the lgb file.

File 1 - 99.4 MB (104,274,395 bytes)

File 2 - 12.9 MB (13,534,847 bytes)

Liberty 0.8 - 126 MB (132,872,357 bytes)

Ill try downloading them again and see if anything changes. I'm hoping this might be the issue.

The sizes look right. Maybe making a video of the process would help?

You might also try rebooting the phone after you install the rooted gb files to see if that works, then reinstall d2 bootstrap, reboot recovery and wipe + install lgb after that.

that is what i did the first time until i read that you need to install part 1, then 2, and then liberty without rebooting or anything.

I too anxiously await more confirmation that the new 596 install in the toolbox will work going straight from 2.0.1. And also that the toolbox will install v 0.9 flawlessly as well.

Same here. I've actually have had my phone running stock Froyo for the past day because cyanogenmod7 and liberty are not working for me. I got cyanogenmod7 working but every time i try to go to clockwork i get in a bootloop and have to SBF so if i can't get into clockwork to apply themes or even make a backup then its not worth it. I really wish something would work though, I'm tired of looking at my same old phone.
. I read somewhere that you cannot use cwr on cm7, lest you brick your device. Wish I could remember where I saw that...

It's on this thread in several places:
[ROM][BETA] CyanogenMod 7 for the Droid X

One of our faithful forum members tried it and it didn't work. It's possible it may work for you. But one way or the other you should always be prepared to SBF. It's not as bad as you think. It's a smooth, easy process unless your cat has a bad habit of chewing through the USB cable you're using to SBF. :)

Updated OP

I finally got around to doing a bit of research into Linux/Mac instructions and updated the original post with them (see Method 2.) Method 2 also works if you can't get RSD Lite to recognize your phone. Let me know if you have any questions!

seems like zeroed77 had some success. Like zeroed I prefer to not sbf unless absolutely necessary. For more reasons than I care to defend. I'm quite happy with 2.0.1 for the next couple minutes till the toolbox install is perfected. I've great faith jrummy'll get it done. Of course I'd hate to discourage anyone else from attempting the toolbox install and reporting their results. Its gotta be in there for a reason, yes?

Yep! Good-to-go.

What's frustrating to me is, SBF use to be reserved to resolve the worst of issues. A last resort. Most folks on here didn't like doing it and most "pros" recommended it as a last step. Now, since switch to GB Lib, everyone is acting like it's part of every day life and a support upgrade path.

1. SBF isn't as little understood as it used to be
2. GB isn't rootable, therefore, if you start from standard stock GB, you have no choice but to SBF to install a custom ROM (including LGB.)
3. If you're going to install a custom ROM, knowing how to SBF is a basic necessity in case something goes wrong (software OR hardware.)

Personally, I do it before I install a new ROM, or even a newer version of a current ROM. Cleans the slate so that I know that any issues I encounter are specific to the new ROM I just installed, and not some ghost code left over from a previous version. It wasn't always that way. I used to go from one ROM to another without SBF. I had a lot more issues back then. My phone is a lot more stable when every install I do is clean, from scratch. Your mileage may vary.
