We have only had the Galaxy S8 now for a few days officially yet Samsung and Qualcomm are already moving forward on chip development for the Galaxy S9. Reportedly the new chip will be called the Snapdragon 845 and will be manufactured by Samsung or TSMC using a 7-nanometer process. This should bring an improvement in both performance and efficiency. It looks like Samsung was so happy with being the first to market with the Snapdragon 835 that they are looking to do the same thing with the Snapdragon 845. Hopefully Samsung beginning work on the device so early is a sign of quality control being of the utmost importance.
