Gmail 2.3.5 Label Notifications

I have assigned a custom notification for a label. When an email with that label is received I get two notifications. One appears to be generated by the inbox notification and one by the custom notification. Both notification sounds play and two mail icons appear in the notification bar. Is this expected behavior?

I was hoping that the custom label notification would override / take priority over the generic inbox notification and that only one notification would be generated.

Ultimately, I would like to be notified of every email but have certain labels produce unique sounds.

Things I would like to avoid if possible:

1. Turning off inbox notifications
2. Having the custom label skip the inbox
3. Assigning a generic label to all emails not assigned a custom label

Could someone at least please comment as to whether they are experiencing the same behavior or not?
