Going in to get my Bionic now! What do you think?

Really? Nobody sees the display quality problem?? I just got my Bionic today (switching from original Droid A855). The display quality is UTTERLY TERRIBLE! All I see is pixels pixels pixels. Colors are terrible; pictures, videos, and small fonts are terrible. I don't understand, the display is 100 worse than my 3-year old phone.... Nobody? I'm returning mine this weekend.

Sounds like you need an exchange than. Most of us don't see any of that.

Yeah I deff don't see any of that man. This screen is amazing! Best I have seen. I kee it on the lowest brightness setting and I still have not a problem seeing it in direct sun light or in the dark. Its amazing!! HD quality here.

Weird

That's so weird. It seems like online, some people see it and some people don't at all. I did read that complaint online reviews like CNET etc. before buying, but figured that I'd ignore them cus those reviewers are usually snobs and have too high expectations.

I wonder if it's my Daltonism.... What phones did you upgrade from? How does it compare to your old ones?

D1. D2. D2G ..... not going to say the screen is amazingly superior to any of them, but its a definite improvement and speed wise it's unmatched.

Here's a great post from another member explaining the technology:

I wanted to comment on the confusion around the PenTile display in the overall thread. What some refer to as "pixelation" is actually something a bit different. PenTile technology uses 2/3 the number of subpixels to render each pixel, which saves power while also producing a brighter screen. What people call the "screen door" effect or "pixelation" is actually pattern visibility. In certain color combinations the patterns created by the subpixels become visible -- green on black is a common one, which you can see in the battery indicator of the notification bar. Some people are distracted or annoyed by the patterns, while others can hardly see them or just ignore them. Personally after using the beautifully crisp OG Droid screen for almost 2 years, I was afraid the PenTile screen would put me off the Bionic after reading about it. However, after seeing it firsthand in the store and now after a week of owning it, I can say it doesn't bother me one bit. I can sometimes see the patterns but they don't distract me, I basically just "look through them" and they disappear. For some people though, it's so annoying as to be a dealbreaker. I would highly recommend for anyone considering the Bionic to take a look at one in person before deciding. It's highly subjective.

One thing I am sure of though is the power savings. On my OG Droid, Display was always #1 in the Battery Usage Stats screen, often as high as 90% of total battery life. On the Bionic this is reversed, with Display only using about 10% of battery life. Of course, this is offset by other power-hungry components (4G radio, I'm looking at you) so overall battery life is in the same ballpark (although I'm still getting somewhat better battery life I did with my OG Droid).

I'm with you. I can definitely see it on the white colors. But with that said, I compared the display to the Charge, and the colors on that phone are just way off. Put the same white screen on the Bionic and the Charge, and hold them up side-by-side. You'll see what I mean. The whites on the Charge almost look green/blue compared to the crisp white of the Bionic.

Great post. Thanks. I guess depends on your eyes too. I'll give it the benefit of the doubt for about a week and report whether I've gotten used to it (although I doubt it). The problem is that it's not just colors, but also edges, which affects the clarity. In other words, lines and edges look jagged, or sawlike.

One more thing that I noticed, especially playing YouTube videos ("Michael" PS3 Long Live...) side by side with my G1, is that the Bionic has much higher contrast, that you loose a lot of detail, especially with darker videos like the one referenced.

Is there a way to decrease the contrast? I already looked but doesn't look like it's possible.

Sorry to hijack the thread.

I did this, and altho the Charge was slightly crisper, if I took one phone away and looked at it, then went back and looked at the other, I wouldn't have noticed a difference.

Well ANY video you upload to YouTube, no matter what phone, decreases the quality of the of the video. Look up the 9/11 memorial videos I posted here. One using Youtube to upload, other I uploaded from gallery. One I used youtube for came out blurryish, while the ones I uploaded from the Bionic using gallery had the HD tag next to them and were much much better.

I wasn't talking about uploading video. I was talking about viewing and comparing video side by side between Orig Droid and Bionic.
