Google keyboard gets a much needed update and I like it.

My Google keyboard has moved down from 3 to 5 now. I'm thinking it's working harder building a base to work from and will drop even more as time goes on.

Seeing this Google keyboard and the ability to theme had me ask where have I seen this before. I mean yes we have been customizing keyboards for awhile with other keyboards on the market. But something struck me from the past.

Wow. Digging way down into the archives! We've enjoyed customizing & theming on android for years.
Almost makes you sad that iOS only recently added support for third party keyboard that can be skinned.

Funny thing is you can actually still use that link. Just for experiment sake I may bust out my nexus 5 to play with them later. I'm sure it will probably lag and FC.

I alternate between it and Swype. Today is Google because Swype missed too many words for me yesterday though the 7 choices for alternative and quick copy/paste plus a few other things I'm so used to always draws me back. Swype got an update Friday I think it was so I was using it today. I'm actually back on the latest GKB update that adds themes. To use the feature you like most I have to have borders on my black theme to be able to see the space bar. It's a nice ability but I like that they finally added swipe to the left from the delete key to erase entire words. With Swype I'd long press a word, scroll back and forth to get the whole sentence, paragraph, etc then tap the delete key. Time wise they're about the same but adding in the space bar acts like an arrow saves time.
