I wish there was a way to tag you contacts to let Google Voice know whether the call should go out with GV or VZW.

I have some contacts (Other VZ users) I call directly with my cell number.
I have other contacts (restaurants, businesses, etc.) I call using my GV number.

The problem is I have to make that choice every time I make a phone call. It is a bigger problem when I use my cars bluetooth dialer, because I have to make the call from the car, then take my hands off the steering wheel to click the option on the phone.

Please Google, allows to tag phone numbers to automatically use the outgoing method I want with each phone number.

This isn't what you are looking for, but maybe it will be useful to you until GV implements the feature you are looking for. You can set a GV Toggle on your home screen by long-pressing on your screen and then going to the "Shortcuts" menu. It's basically like a widget that will toggle your GV on and off with one click from the home screen.

so I have searched and have not found what I was looking for. How do I set this up so I get free sms? i just got my gv number today after seeing the update had sync to inbox. So do I just give people my gv number? I had my wife txt my gv number and it still comes in both my gv app and hancent so wont I get charged sms fees? a little help on getting free sms please

On the GV website go to settings, phones, your cell, edit and uncheck allow sms. This way it goes by the GV app only and will not be handled through Verizon at all. I love that it is almost instant now.

Do I have to have Sync turned on at all times for this to work? I control sync with the power widget and keep it turned off to save battery life. While someone answers that, can you also tell me what the sync button really does anyway?

menu--> settings-->accounts & sync ..............under manage accounts, these are the accounts that will sync, when you have sync enabled.

I played with sync and GV (for texting ONLY), and I have found that it takes about 2 minutes for a text from a phone (wifes phone, right beside mine, choco touch), to get to my GV app.......................having sync turned off or on, didn't seem to make any difference at all. So you can leave the sync function off and still get your text/sms messages through GV.

And when I say two minutes, it took up to 2 minutes..........sometimes one minute, but not over 2 minutes. So it's not as fast as regular texting, but better than it was before.................but hey, it's free :icon_ banana::icon_ banana::icon_ banana::icon_ banana::icon_ banana:

Have you guys noticed a significant drain in battery life from using GV for texting? I'm a little worried because of the heavy data usage.

you can not do this automatically yet, you have to do it manually on your google contacts online

I think it does a bit, i am back to using 406 numbers with chomp and using ultimate juice so i got awesome battery
