Google's new standalone Messenger App now available in the Play Store

I'm probably the only person on the planet who uses Hangouts as his main SMS portal BECAUSE I don't have a texting plan -- using GV instead (yay free unlimited texting!). Just tried the new Messenger App and unfortunately, unlike Hangouts, I can't force it to route texts through my GV number. Ah, no loss I guess...I actually like Hangouts and the way everything is consolidated. And throwing in free VOIP calls over cell/wifi is not bad either.

I installed it for a minute. Just can't do it. Hangouts is serving me well & like I said before, taking sms away from it turns out into an app that I'll still have to keep for Google voice, hangouts messaging every few months, & video calls a few times a year.

I have a GV number, but have never used it. Once a year I get an email to use it or lose it so I ring someone once and then let the number idle until the next year that I am prompted.

I'm using Hangouts and see no reason to move away from it. In the U.S. I use it with phone numbers and when overseas I switch it to email addresses.

Can I do that with the Messenger?
Nope. Messenger is strictly for sms & mms so far.

That is what I use Hangouts for. I'm not catching on to how Messenger is different.

In the U.S. I select the phone number of the SMS/MMS recipient. When overseas I select the drop down box and choose their email address and it goes through just like a usual SMS/MMS.

The difference is I'm not sure you can select an email address.
