Has anyone been pulled over for watching football while driving?

Debating what activities are more distracting is really not that important. Remember, your commanding a 4000lb vehicle at life threatening speeds. Be smart. There are thousands of things to distract you every day while driving.
If a tragedy happens, the only thing that is going to matter is that someone won't get to walk their daughter down the isle, or see their son graduate.

I drive 1000 miles a week, some of it on a motorcycle, and whenever I come across a serious wreck, all I can think of is that the poor person got up this morning with no idea that his and his family's life would be changed forever.
Just be smart, and hope the person beside you is doing the same.

Gmmm..that one seems to agree with me that kids are more distracting

This one.....
Driver Distractions - Don't Be a Statistic
Simply lists out all the main distractions, but doesnt rank them.....hoever, again, kids are there. It does say that other teens being in the car is a distraction for teen drivers leading it to be the number 1 cause of death of that age group.....

So there are your facts...... how about instead of kneejerk laws over texting..... you pressure your lawmakers to make teens riding with teens illegal? Or is that not politically correct enough for ya.....

Again....until you stop transporting your kids....im going to use my cell phone as i see fit....

1) the article was from Britain, and so this should be correlated 100% as their conditions are different. i've lived in Europe and can attest that the streets, traffic, etc is MUCH different. But the point holds in that kids can be a distration.2

2) the DMV article actually doesn't list kids as a factor. There is a subheader on kids, but as you view the text:

According to the NHTSA and VTTI study, the principal actions that cause distracted driving and lead to vehicle crashes are:

  • cell phone use.
  • reaching for a moving object inside the vehicle.
  • looking at an object or event outside of the vehicle.
  • reading.
  • applying makeup.
There isn't anything in that about kids, unless you want to infer moving object is a kid. I read that as trying to get that cup that's rolling around the front or backseat. Or alternately, the sippy cup your kid dropped.

+1. It takes a moment. i almost got hit by an idiot on an on ramp (I have the right of way and he didn't feel, by accident or design, that he needed to yield.)

It really doesn't matter what is more distracting and what is less distracting. Pointing at something that is more distracting than what you're doing doesn't make the lesser distraction safe. By your reasoning we should just discard laws on lesser crimes since there are worse crimes. Distractions are distractions. Claiming that a lesser distraction isn't an issue unless all distractions are eliminated is a ridiculous argument. Distractions aren't going away. It's a matter of just minimizing them and their impact. If the lowest common denominator can't manage their distractions then we have to deal with "nanny state" regulations.

I will put my 25 years of no tickets or wrecks on the line and say i can handle multitasking while driving.
Anecdotal evidence and your particular results from playing the odds don't prove anything. Good luck with playing the odds in the future if you're going to count on them.

Again, what you're capable or not capable of isn't the only determining factor. You are not the only driver on the road. Neither am I. We all think we're the best drivers on the road but even if that is true (it isn't) then the laws have to factor in the majority of the drivers who are worse (according to us).

Facts show that 96.2% of all quoted facts are made up on the spot. <g>

Hope people get the joke in that :)

What they should do instead of kneejerk antitexting laws cuz its the feelgood law that lawmakers pass in order to get reelected....is just stick to enforcing the laws already on the books..... wreckless driving is already something you can get pulled over for.

So that means.....if you cant drive good when adjusting ac controls doesnt mean i cant drive good while texting.

My point of all the other side distractions is people liken texting and driving to being as evil as hitler when truth is....they are just as distracted, if not more, by other things in their car but thats ok because they can handle kids better than i can my cell phone, right.

But ots ok...we have vigilante cellphone police out there that have determined for me...that my distraction is greater than their distractions and will road rage honk at me until i am out of their site..... meanwhile 5 other drivers are wondering wtf this idiot is honking for and they are now distracted. Good job buddy....you have now created 6 more distracted drivers because you were wprried about what i was doing in my truck.....lol

it takes FAR longer to send a text than it does to adjust your ac or your radio. In fact I can do both of those things without even looking but sending a text requires you to look at your screen. You are being just as bad as these so called "vigilante cell police" you speak of. Kneejerk laws? Please, I am not saying all laws are perfect but this is a law that should be passed in every state. I understand you just want to argue the other side of the coin here and we are all entitled to opinions but let's get serious here.....

Maybe if you weren't so distracted from texting you would've caught your wife cheating sooner.

I am serious.....why do you need two laws that do the same thing.....if im swerving on the road because im texting or yelling at my kids.....i can/should be pulled over using the already existing wreckless driving laws that are already on the books in every state. The great thing about making it simply say wreckless driving for you is it covers future technologies we are unaware of in 2011 and we dont waist time and money passing law after law that, in essence, says the same thing substituting windshield wiper with radio with talking on a cellphone with texting on a cell phone to watching nfl.

You know what antitexting laws have really done???? Instead of drivers holding their phones at the 12:00 position and texting keeping their site on the road, they have moved their phones into their laps so they wont get caught as easily....now, instead of glancing down at the phone like they would a rearview mirror and letting their periphrial vision work for them, they have to completely take their eyes off the road for that time.

Unintended consequences are a result of needless laws and actually make the road more dangerous
http://www.cssfirm.com/2010/12/17/texting-while-driving-laws-and-unintended-consequences/

But as long as you feel like youre safer....and as long as you lawmaker gets your vote because he is working for you.....nevermind that its actually making the roadways MORE dangerous

I will agree that some dont need to text and drive.... my ex wife was a horrible driver that thought she could handle anything. Got multiple tickets for....guess what....wreckless driving because she was tailgating, chnaging lanes, etc.
Teens also shouldnt because they are so inexperienced at driving to begin with.

But im not my ex-wife and im not an inexperienced teenager.

Lol.....the rrraaarrrrr is great in you over texting and driving if youre pulling that up from another thread.....

Fwiw....that happened before i became an expert at texting. I was a longtime holdout with texting and only started texting when i got an lgscoop when me and the wife split up and i got my own cellphone plan....

who cares if it is legal or not

last year i was driving in downtown tampa during rush hour. A 25 year old woman was driving a honda civic and was texting with her two kids in the back seat, one being an infant. she rear ended me going at least 50mph. she no longer has two kids.

does it still matter what laws are against it? dont do it. its stupid

Seriously? The reason we have these "stupid" laws is because there's stupid people out there. Do we really need our hair dryer to have a tag that says "don't use in shower"? Does McDonald's have to have "Warning: Contents hot" on the hot coffee you just bought? It's the same thing. Some idiot will crash while texting and driving, kill someone and then their lawyer will get them off on a technicality because the wreckless driving law didn't specify texting. There's reasons these "stupid" laws are made, and that's because people are too stupid to apply a general law to a specific situation, and lawyers are smart enough to find a loophole.

I agree with you that a distraction is a distraction, but come on your argument is wholly ridiculous. Like someone already said, it only takes a moment. You're not the perfect driver, as much as you want to convince yourself that you are. And even if you were (which you are not), it doesn't matter. There might some other guy who doesn't have 25 years of spotless driving on his record, who crashes into you because he was texting and driving.

I gotta give you that point on the lawyer thing..... touche' i never thought about it that way

Still does not mean it doesnt make the road ways more dangerous by the unintended consequences now does it though.

To the guy that gave the example of the lady who lost 2 kids.... its tragic..... but id argue thats a seatbelt issue more than a texting issue. Amd just as tragic....kids ha e died in car wrecks from wreckless driving long before cellphones were ever invented. Your strawman....while tragic...is not a valid argument

p

lease let us know where you live (city) so we can avoid your town.

And like i said before...dont judge me as a hitler type monster for refusing to give up my distraction when truth is....you have just as many, albeit different, distractions.

Im no more distracted than you are on the road.....you may not text, but have kids in the car......to me, its equal to me texting without kids in the car because i dont have kids while you may.
I dont have ac heater or a radio in my jeep......3 less distractions than you have.....
I never eat food in the jeep (mainly because it makes a mess with no doors) but again....im simply substituting my distraction for your distraction.

So who are you to say MY distraction is just so much worse than yours. Whatever those distractions may be....be it kids, be it a nagging wife who backseat drives, be it messing with your radio and climate controls.
