How Smooth is your Droid?

I am also running Bugless Beast 7.5 and have mine set at 950mhz. It runs flawlessly...... However this was not always the case. After I used my phone for about a month or so and installed and uninstalled lots of apps my phone started to seem slower and had a lag.

The fix for me at the time was a factory reset. After I did the factory reset it was just like brand new again. When I run it factory I turn off all screen animations also which speeds things up. (bugless beast has animations off from the start)

I don't know if this is correct or not, but it sure fixed my lag issues. It's kinda like an old computer that seemed to get slower with time, and when you do a complete reformat and reinstall of the operating system it's like new again.

Since my factory reset my phone has been flawless and fast again. I bet that will help out those that feel their phones have slowed over time.

Agreed. Its like windows. lol. I think they just need to get the kinks out of the OS. Its good, its just not perfect yet.

Well thing is i just installed the BB 7.5 at 1ghz after factory reseting so everything was whiped clean. The animations were turned on after installing.

I would turn off the animations, it just slows things down. Also I run Advanced Task Manager, but I exclude all things that are needed and that I run often. I only kill the fluff type stuff that we run all the time when I am done with it. With ATM I don't even have to have it running all the time, since it has a widget that you can just tap to kill everything.

Again, with any of those killer programs you have to set up exclusions for all the important stuff.

I also imagine that 2.1 will have some improvements. Things will only get better. However I am not going back to stock, I am very pleased with Bugless Beast and will wait.

Unless this is prevalent in an overwhelming amount of applications you're using mutually between both devices, then you might wanna point your finger in the direction of the software.

i think the thing that would really help speed things up was if we could get a way for the system to manage the ram better. i'm a strong believer in ram as the cause of slow devices (over the cpu generally).

I've never heard anyone claim its the fastest. I'm not the first one to notice that BB is slow for an OC ROM, either. Gentlefury also mentioned this in a previous OC thread.

I disagree. My beliefs are almost entirely the opposite.

i know. i was expecting that. i dont know why i think so, but its just the way i am. i know most people would dissagree.

what is a faster one then? - heard sholes has bugs and stuff. is smoked glass better?
thanks

Mine is not as smooth as it should be, and this is even running at 950 MHz, and not running any ROMs or extras. It was once explained somewhere that the OS doesn't use OpenGL to render the UI in apps like the iPhone does, and that this was the reason that the droid UI animations are always choppy or appear to have a low refresh rate. I don't know personally if OpenGL is the reason, but I am definitely a bit bothered by it. I think it brings the user experience down a notch when compared to the iPhone, but maybe I only really notice because I had an iPhone before the Droid and I really liked the way everything slides around like it's on ball bearings. If OpenGL (or lack of it) is really the reason for the choppy animations, then it doesn't explain why other Android devices are fine (but I haven't tried any other Android devices.) Perhaps the lower screen res of the others allows a higher refresh rate and makes the issue less noticeable.

I hope, at some point, they can fix this issue in the OS. I think it makes the user experience better when all the sliding and scrolling and transitions have that liquid smooth feel to them.

I'd try the Sholes ROM before knocking it.

I run my own custom setup.

Deodexed Android
Optimized APKs
1ghz OC with t3hSteve's kernel that has backported fixes in it
Smoked Glass 2.0 metamorph theme
5 screen 2.0.1 launcher
MT Browser, and 3D Gallery

...and a whole slew of stuff I removed from my ROM as well.

It works very well. I reccomend folks try the path of DIY. It makes for a learning experience, and IMO, a faster ROM thats exactly how you want it.

Mine is butter. iPhone doesn't have to push near as many pixels as the Droid does.

A lot of what people perceive as choppiness is due to the screen transition on the launcher. The wallpaper scrolls as well as the icons, and both scroll at different speeds.

Don't believe me? USe Home++ and turn off wallpaper scroll. Suddenly, its looks very, very smooth.
