[How To] Unlock Bootloader & Root Galaxy Nexus

Ahhh bruhniggs, its painful to see u posting in threads besides the OG ones :)
How's that baby running so far? I can imagine its quite the difference, especially running true ICS. Man, I didn't even know that u could unlock the bootloader on the nexus haha. Maybe I would've upgraded months ago. Anyways hope all is going well. I look forward to collaborating with you in the future, once I do finally upgrade.

Lol, yeah this phone is a beast. You will be surprised once you upgrade from your OG to this! I recommend you upgrade ASAP.
And it is weird posting in the gnex forums without you guys in there! Will be looking forward for you guys to join

This phone is truly amazing. I just got it yesterday and I'm rooting it today after track. I can not wait to load up roms. Does performance stay smooth? I remember on the d1 froyo roms were slow and so were GB.

It is actually smoother when you get the right setup. Choose a rom that's good for your phone (its all personal preference)
And a kernel I reccomend for speed, snappiness, and battery life would be Franco's nightly build or M2 stable

Alright I know there's a answer somewhere but mainly being on the Bionic threads I haven't stayed up to date with the Nexus. My GF and Bro n Law want their Nexus's rooted, both stock on 4.0.4, can we just root without unlocking boot loader and what method do I use? Sorry noob question, thanks.

Nope, currently the only way(s) to root require you to be unlocked.

Trying to do this manually becasue Wug's kit didn't work. I'm at the point where it asks me to Launch PDAnet on my phone and Enable USB tether to turn it on. I do not see that PDANet was installed on my phone. It currently shows the correct drive for the phone on my PC.

The first time I did it, PDANet didn't install on my phone either. And you don't have to launch PDANet after if I remember right. This way is just to get the drivers installed so you can use adb and fastboot (which is not needed a lot in this tutorial but will very much be needed down the line).

Wug's kit should always work. What issues are you having? Are your drivers set up correctly? Trust me, Wug's method is MUCH easier than mine.

Ok, found the PDAnet.apk on my PC and installed on Phone.

I can't get past the PDA installing on my phone either! "Win USB device could not be opened (err=5000)"

Why can't I unlock/root anything!? My tablet or my phone, god I wish there was just some similar z4 app like I used to have on Froyo.
